Taken

Spielberg's 10-part series, Taken starts tonight on BBC2 for those who haven't download the divx's already.

I found it to be entertaining but it has schmaltz by the bucketload so be careful about that. BBC seems to have given it a rather erratic viewing schedule, where it would have been much better to show them all on consecutive days as in the US. But it should make a nice change from the usual pap on these days.

*Edit* Bloody links.

Can't find a decent link to it and radio times isn't co-operating.

Not sure if your pop-up killers will stop from using their site properly. But the first part is on 9pm BB2 tonight if you are wondering :p

I've seen the adverts and it doesn't really appeal to me. If I remember to watch it, I probably will just to see what it's like.

Why do terestrial tv stations put the 'new' stuff on friday and saturday nights, they must realise most people go out...

They should make Sunday the night for all that stuff imo

Wasn't that supposed to be on sometime last year, but was put back due to the Holly and Jessica situation?

wtf is 'schmaltz'?

Well I should have spelt it Shmaltz but not that much difference.

I guess it refers to those feel-good, tear-jerking moments that you get in films, especially Disney films and I believe also features in a lot of Spielbergs movies. For instance if two charactors were looking at eachother with quivering lips and streaming tears after having not seen eachother for 20 years. Some directors like to drag out those moments to last several minutes which I find can be quite stomach churning.

I'm sure there's some Jewish origin to the word but I can't be bothered to research it.

*Edit* Oooh I got it right the first time.

From dictionary.com:-

schmaltz also schmalz ( P ) Pronunciation Key (shmälts)
n.
1. Informal.
a. Excessively sentimental art or music.
b. Maudlin sentimentality.

2. Liquid fat, especially chicken fat.

Steven Spielberg’s latest production is this ambitious ten-part drama which intertwines half a century of alien mythology with the lives of three fictional families in America. The 1940s: an Illinois fighter pilot, an unscrupulous army officer and a Texas waitress experience close encounters that awaken them to the unsettling reality of alien visitors on Earth. Episode directed by Tobe Hooper.

Um, there was a houseload more schmaltz in Pearl Harbor (nnngh) than there was in Saving Private Ryan... In fact, where was there any in SPR? It wasn't overly sentimental, as far as I can remember.

The first 20 minutes was full of lovey dovey shite in SPR though.

The only schmaltz in SPR was those UNBELIEVABLY SHITE 'old-man-Ryan' bits at the beginning and end. "Did I lead a good life?" he asks his wife while his stunningly attractive young family gather behind... fade to US flag fluttering in the sun.

Vom-inducing and degraded the film.

In some cases, it helps the film or builds up a character (Red Dragon, the blind woman interacting with Dolarhyde) and in others it's completely unnecessary.

Thats cos you should be using On The Box instead...

I will be watching it just to see what its like...Its supposed to be about relationships of people who have had experiences of abduction...

Sounds a bit crap tbh

I thought Red Dragon was very very good. Personally I rate it above The Silence Of The Lambs and Hannibal.

Or am I just crazy? :)

Taken was shit.
The graphics were circa 1990. human lighting in the 3D scenes was atrocious.

I agree with that. Having a cast of rugged-American military-types who all look alike and pretty 1940s beauties who also all look alike didn't help in following things. I spent 20 minutes thinking the person I was watching was the pilot in the opening sequence whereas he was in fact, that evil Captain.

I'm not struck by it but I'll persevere. They obviously have a lot of character and plot to establish in the first episode.

I had that same problem in Band of Brothers, not being able to tell them apart.

The 2nd episode was on BBC Choice at 10:30pm, so BBC Choice is 1 episode ahead.

The official BBC Website is www.bbc.co.uk/taken

I quite liked it, mostly :)

I never said I didn't like it. :)

But Silence of the Lambs > Red Dragon > Hannibal > Manhunter. :)

And the "similar looking people" thing pissed me off in Last Man Standing, for the record. :)

I've never seen it, but I've often heard that Manhunter was the best one of out of the lot. Weird!

I wasn't particularly impressed with most of Hannibal, it got better towards the end though.
