Not sure if it's the heat or something else, but I have a feeling we're all a bit more grumpy than usual here at FH. We whine about realms, players, classes, abilities - even taking it to personal insults and verbal attacks.

Yesterday I paid a visit to https://forums.freddyshouse.com/forumdisplay.php?f=301 for the first time ever; I didn't know it existed until then. I spent quite some time reading the posts there (work is really slow atm...) and even downloaded the movie from Gamblor's memorial event.

If you haven't done it already, I suggest you take a look at the posts and keep them in mind the next time you are having an argument with somebody on FH.

There's nothing wrong with arguments (the community would be pretty darn boring without them) but they don't have to be so bloody personal. We're all human beings, and no matter if we play Albion, Hibernia or Midgard we're just trying to enjoy ourselves in a bunch of binary digits.

So, instead of creating the next FH whine, take a step back, take a deep breath and remember that there's a lot more important things in life.

Dude, it's a forum on the retardnet. I actually kinda judge you for taking it soo seriousely. Sure the whining on FH is quadruple then on womenhatemen.com, but the main problem on FH is that most posters take it too a unhealthy level of seriousness it's just stupid. You can't flamebait for a bit before people lock threads or judge u for beeing sarcastic. That's what annoys the shit out of me here. "there is no reason for calling people names lalala" Feels like school all over again.

On other forums, people flamebait a bit or have fun by calling each other stupid things which most of the time turns into a fun thread. Here, u get hit with the doom stick of conduct & social values in real life.

my 20 cents

Tbh I agree with Loonatik. Mac, a forum might be on the internet, but just cause you're spreading your opinion via a keyboard, it doesn't mean that it has to be abusive towards other people.

So what's a forum? Historically a forum is a meeting place for social, juristical, political interaction and trading. Yes, people meeting each other in real life, surprise. I'm a very sarcastic person, trust me, but not in a community where some people might take it wrong. It's called respect, because I don't want to pester other people. If I'm joking with people I don't know, I do it in a way where everybody will see it as a joke, not just the 1% I know.

Yes it's easy to post something when you're angry cause nobody will hold you responsible for it. Let's face it, the banstick is nothing really to worry about. Telling some dude in a bar that his clothes suck ass might get you into more trouble actually, depending on his statue. So if enforcing discipline is harder, then people should at least have the self-discipline and think about what they post before hitting the button to submit.

Look, I don't mind a good discussion about classes, specs, RvR events, AC raids or whatever, that's what the RvR forum is for. But if one joke or two gets the complete discussion off-topic, then something is wrong. At least people should post something ON topic then aswell. I don't exclude myself there, I'm no saint myself cause I'm pretty sure I posted stuff off topic aswell, but generally people should try to avoid it more often.

The world is evolving and in the old days you went to your neighbour to talk. If you insulted him, he wouldn't like it, that easy. Nowadays we have the opportunity to communicate with people all over the world and just because you can neither see nor touch them, it doesn't mean that the basic rules of interaction are outdated. If you want my opinion, it's even harder this way cause if someone writes "You suck", "You're an idiot" or something similar, I can't see your face. If I tell a friend of mine that he's an idiot after some really idiot remark, he won't get it wrong, you know. There's a huge of difference in mimic aswell.

I know you won't like me for that post Mac, but really, if people thought a bit more before posting this forum would be much better.

Agreed. But I think the game causes that, DAOC imo is one of the most integrating or addictive games on par with EQ and such (which I've never played), meaning people on average take it more seriously. A few take it far too seriously to the point where rather than just disliking the way someone else plays in game, they develope a genuine hatred for the people behind these characters. But if you look at the amount of serious regular flamers, which I think numbers in the tens at most, it's obvious that these people represent a very small proportion of the DAOC playerbase so it's really not that bad.

I agree...

The whine and harrassment really puts me off (and I see the blunt of it of course, having to moderate all of the crap out of threads). It's very damaging to the community and the game. I guess with a couple of inches of plastic and a thousand kilometres of wire in between, people feel safe to insult, harass and abuse.

I wish people would think twice when they posted, but you'll always get immaturity seeping through, especially when a large proportion of the memberbase are still just children.

Except liloe is male, and the last thing we need is another internet hero posting witty one-line posts

I don't really agree that if everyone would show respect to eachother this forum would be a better place, pissed off people make for much better rvr :D. Problem is some of the arguments go way too far, like the die irl trend a while ago.

There are lots of places where you can be a carebear and talk maturely about serious topics, but in the end this is about a game where the end goal is to get as many people killed in the other realm > leads to frustration > leads to flames > leads to people seeking revenge > leads to better rvr. Currently you can hardly post anything before getting warned or banned, reducing those you want revenge ingame on to a very small number (Just eggy :()

This community was at its best in OF when there were many rvr guilds out that all had tensions in one way or another with eachother. Imagine if RG, LA, BC, FC, VGN and all those other countless guilds logged on BW to talk about how great their day was and how thankful they are about getting added on. No, the flaming was good and part of the game.

It gets bad when people can't see the limits of daoc/forum and rl.

Utter bollocks.

I would say under 0.5% of posts get people warned/banned. Personally I haven't warned anyone today. True, I've deleted a few whine posts (yes, even from Staj's grats thread). Those getting warned are the same individuals, striving to make people's lives as miserable as possible.

You can discuss anything you want, as long as it doesn't lead to abuse, insults or flaming. And no, we're not doing this <whine whine mod> thread again.

Ironically, those people reporting posts to the mods for insulting/flaming them are the same people who insult and flame themselves

If people calling eachother "retards" is the reason you visit this forum, I guess I do. Call me optimistic, but I think there's quite a few visitors that come here for other reasons.

If you can't discuss a computer game without personal insults, you have a problem. I wonder what your RL arguments look like....?

The real issues stem from the fact that there's two main types of posters here..

The type of players who log on to find out about raids and discuss what they did at work today with other people.

and the internet generation that don't see anything wrong with shouting insults at each other over the internet.

The problem is simply that "group 1" often doesn't see what "group 2" is actually doing. In most cases the 20 page flame threads are just their way of letting out some frustrations, in this case it's not actually harming anyone as can be seen by the fact that the other side is normally giving as good as they are taking..
The main problem is that the old forums used to be like that and they loved it, however as ToA hit and more and more gamers started using the forums to arrange events, to the point you almost need to check FH if you want to get a char ToA'ed and more of "group 1" started turning up here.. What they see when they read your average 10 page flame thread is pointless flame which they don't understand and dislike, and so arrive the "You wouldn't say that to me IRL you lame kid" comments and things start getting ugly..

All we've really proved is the two types of people can't exist on the same forums. Group 2 doesn't want to give up their old forum habits.. they were here first afterall, and group 1 wants the forums but doesn't want any of Group 2's bullcrap while they are reading them..

The Mods naturally tend to favour group 1 because they are normally capable of complaining without resorting to pathetic insults, or the need to namedrop their dislike of eggy in every thread, if relevant or not (naming no names, cough).

The real culprit is really the fact that you almost need to read the forums to play the game these days.. Without that, all the people who didn't want to read whine just wouldn't come here and so there would be no complaints.

That's all because of the strict moderating the past months, a lot of fun posters have been permabanned and the best threads locked. FH mods want this forum to be a place for mature discussion, fine, all we can do is disagree but the community will rarely have anything to say against mods. I think a good flamefest can be really good for rvr and entertainment (aslong as its within limits) but you have chosen to make those completely extinct.

I agree with the relax, lay back and take it easy part, but it should go both ways. Those that want to flame and insult people need to relax as much as those, who feel the need to keep the forum clean.

The problem here is not only that people tend to take the game too seriously... they take this forum to seriously, and most of all they take themselves too seriously.

Hardly anything people post here (despite raid or game machanics information) will make any difference to anyone. The same words can mean very differnt things to differnt people. Everyone reads what he wants to read, they see what they want to see. People can't stay on topic, because the topic is different for everyone.

This game (and thus the related forum) are escapes from the real world. People come here to relax, fight, vent frustration, flame, to get entertained and be the entertainer. It's all about having fun and having fun is very different to all of us - try it with a little tolerance, lay back and relax and enjoy the ride.
