Tablet advice from arty folk

I'm really getting into my photo editing and illustrator work now, and I want to make the natural progression and get a graphics tablet. I'm just wondering what's the best sort of thing to go for. I don't want the cheapest shoddiest thing, but by the same notion I don't want to spend a fortune on features I may never use. From looking around and reading up wacom seem as good as any, I see they have a new range out. I haven't set a budget yet so all suggestions welcome.

A5 the best size to start out with considering costs?
