Which one?

Im currently trying to decide whether to get a notebook or not, and i which case which one?

I really want a large hdd and not solid state one so im not considering an Eee (of the older models). I also want a larger screen than what seems to be the standard for the subnotebooks 8,9'', preferably 10''. Ram size should be 1 gig. And possibility for upgrade would also be nice. Webcam and mic is nice, but not a must.

From these criteria i'm considering the Asus Eee 1000 (with harddisk) or the MSI Wind with linux (appearantly it has larger battery according to wiki).

So FH, do you know of any placed to buy these? Or know if theres some new subnotebooks commin up in the near future which might be nicer than these?

I got an eeepc 1000 recently (the one with the solid state drive though) and I find it really good, it has some nice features, such as the 2 finger scrolling touchpad and the 3 speeds you can run the processor at depending on how much speed/battery life you want. I find that just normal use the battery will last about 5 hours, which is pretty decent, and much better than my normal laptop.

I got this one off Amazon, so it's worth looking their, other than that there is an official site working with asus (who's name I can't remember but I'm sure you can find with a quick google), which would be worth a check.

Its sounds like a really nice candidate for a notebook. Could be nice if i could get the keyboard with danish layout tho, is that possible?

How much do you know about the OS? Is it built on debian?

I don't know sorry, it might be possible to program it like that though.

To get the 1000 with the 80gig HHD, you have to get the windows OS, the linux one comes with a 40 gig SSD. Although I'm soon going to replace the OS on it I think, as the Xandros one is irritating for use as a normal laptop, but it's fine for just writing lecture notes on etc. I want something a bit more powerful on there.

Apple is absolutely userfriendly, cause the basic system is easy to use for everyone, but the console offers everything a "geek" needs =)

…and for more geekness you can dual boot a Linux, then you still have the awesome hardware =)

I had a Acer One A150L but i put XP on it. It was a nice machine for the odd bit of use the time where i did use it for more than an hour i ended up woth sore eyes. But for my use of a silent download / light web browsing its was great for the price. Im going to buy myself one closer to Christmas.

Does the A150L not have WIFI built in ?
Camera, RAM, and hard drive are a bit wimpy
Otherwise I like the fact its really lite and quiet. And its dirt cheap too

Has Wifi yeah the camera may as well not be there really. I though for the size of it 120gb harddisk was good enough did what i wanted perfectly Twonky Media server. And it really is very close to silent. I think i will wait for January sales try pick one up for around £200 fingers crossed.

I do not think a Netbook will come out with a hard disk that size for a while it will add around £100 to the price which puts it in real laptop realms. Looks like most of them are ATA disks so a self upgrade might be your best option should you want a netbook size with 500gb disk.

Thats my only concern about the laptop i bought, 40 GB is quite small, and shrinks to 32GB with system installed. Although it is SSD so I can forgive its small size, but that doesnt change the fact that i might not be able to fit on all my music on it. I might so some sneaky business with some vpn and serve my music from a NAS share connected to my router so I can access it from anywhere. Could be quite nice actually

Just saw an ad for a Packard Bell: 4 GB Ram, 640 GB Hard. That'll do for me. Shame its a tower. Give me that in a WIFI silent laptop. Gotta be silent. Fed up with noisy computers

I'd consider Apple user friendly compared to Windows..
