apparently under my tax code i can earn 400 quid a month untaxed.
does this apply to only working one job at a time, or is it possible to work x amount of jobs, as long as the net wage is within the limit?

You can earn up to your tax code (£5035 pa or 419pcm) without paying tax.

The problem with having more than one job is that any additional job will have to tax you at basic rate (BR tax code = 22% of earnings) but won't charge you NI on additional jobs. Thus you will pay tax in any additional job but you can claim this back from the tax office at the end of the year via form P50.
