Hi All

im planning my media centre set up and am thinking of having my MCE computer upsatirs in a converted attic and running a ethernet cable downstairs into my Xbox 360. The question is can I stream DVD's from my computer through the Ethernet cable?

Maybe a newbie question but as im stiil in the planning stages (mixture between waiting for VISTA and the "one who shall be obeyed" not releasing the funds ) thought id try here before spending money

Thanks in advance :fluffle:

If you want to listen to radio streams you can do it :) (Videostreams should work as well.)

There are two ways this can be done

You can:

Create a file with the extension .strm and fill it with the URL of the stream. This should look like: mms://host/path/to/stream or rtsp://host/path/to/stream, though other protocols are supported such as http://host/path/to/somefile.mp3.
Put the .strm file somewhere and open it with the XBMC.

Or:

Download a supported playlist file off the internet, for example stream.pls or something else (these playlist files can often be found on the
website of the radio station).
Save it to a network share or supported device (or your xbox).
Play (remember if it doesn't work and it's a streaming media file then....it's NOT SUPPORTED!)...

Hmm posted it twice after doing the quote thing....strange.

Don't know about DVDs, can't see why, although why not just put the DVD in your 360?

Also, I found some simple instructions to get Divx files streaming to your 360 from a MCE machine. Hope it helps.

Thanks for the speedy reply :) , and as for putting it in my 360.....dont be silly that would be far to easy and uncomlicated. I like to complicate things with lots of wires and silly gadget things :)

Thanks for that link looks great :worthy:

I have tried to stream DVDs before, some of them worked fine and others didn't work at all due to some sort of copyright/permission thing. I'll try to recall the problem (or recreate it) and get you a better answer than that.

I gave up using my MCE for DVD playback in the end (it just does music and hi definition stuff now), it's no patch for a quality DVD player.

Thanks for the help guys :) , im going to rig up a trial version over the weekend, just to see the quality and copyright issues. Ill probably scrap the idea, but I’ve always got to keep the misses on her toes and slightly annoyed. Wouldnt mind doing it for Streaming my music and pics though, but seems a bit pointless. Oh well see how long this fad last's me :m00:
