Im having a few problems with my machine at the moment, im sure I have a virus of some sort. but I cannot connect to any web page with anti virus searches or updates. I have norton av and its updated till last wednesday. When I try to update it just bombs me out. anyone know what this could be and how I can get rid of it without rebooting?

I'm no expert but have you tried booting into safe mode and running your av from there ? Also if you can have connectivity in safe mode you may be able to search for updates. I read both of those tips in here so I won't take any credit

Have you tried looking at what proccesses are running and terminating any unknown ones? Also, you can try to replace your hosts file, since viruses like to screw it over.

sounds like your hosts file has been hijacked.

look for a file called hosts (no extension) and open it with notepad.

i'm betting most of the av sites are pointing to 127.0.0.1 (loopback). delete ll entries in the hosts file.

back it up 1st just incase.

Do not delete the 'localhost' entry.
