So what's the difference between these two seemingly identical (apart from manufacturer) hard drives:

4Tb Western Digital Red (ostensibly sold as "NAS storage")
4Tb Seagate (essentially same spec - rpm/cache/ncq etc)

Could do with another 8Tb of storage to move my media library over to. Outside chance of me buying a QNAP NAS (not much) but if not then maybe in the future. Why would I voluntarily pay the extra for the WD Reds?

No difference really. WD have got so many product lines now but the Reds are aimed at the NAS market and they recommend that you're not supposed to put more than 4 in the same system. They recommend this to try and push you onto their more expensive line (Red Pro), there's no reason at all why the cheaper ones won't work (I've got 30-something of them in one case). The only question is one of reliability, goodness of warranty and price. If the aim is archival and you're not doing anything particularly strenuous with the data then you can put pretty much whatever drive you like in (although I would personally recommend the WD Reds because they're excellent drives).
