Graffiti is one reason why people aren't allowed amongst the stones now, but the main reason, apparently, is that everyone liked to stand in the middle and do their Pagan 'In touch with nature' thing... causing the ground to sink to a level that was endangering the stones.

... dunno why they just don't concrete the bits where people walk (one could use graffiti artists as ballast too).

I used to live about 5 miles away from it and it's such an anticlimax. Really, it is. I remember reading a book about architectural marvels (or something like that) and it had diagrams of the people building Stonehenge. The scale in the book basically set the image up in my head until I saw it in real life. The book made it look like the stones were 50 feet high. Y'right. It's good n'all, I mean it's impressive... but it's just not that impressive anymore.

Of course, someone seeing for the first time might think it's the most magical thing they've ever seen but I must've gone past it at least twice a week for about 5 years.

There is no atmosphere; as Summo said the Portaloos kind of dissipate any atmosphere that there once may have been.

And yeah Xtro, the Cathedral is much more of a worthwhile visit than the 'henge. Tallest spire in the country and all that. When I was living in the area they were restoring the spire and it was covered in scaffolding for the majority of the time. I went back there about 2 years ago and it had all been taken off, it looked b-e-a-utiful.
