We've all done it, you buy something on Steam, start the download and go watch a film or something. You come back in an hour or two and it says;

Updating: 7%, 500KB/s
"7%!!!!!!!!!!!! but it's been downloading pretty fast for over an hour?!"

You know the % is wrong, but you dont know how much is left to download. Well I think I just found a way :)

VIEW > BANDWIDTH MONITOR
Current download rate - 500KB/s
Peak download rate - 500KB/s
Total bytes downloaded this session - 7,575MB aka 7.5GB.

When you start the install, it tells you how big the download will be so you can estimate roughly how much longer the download will take.

p.s. yeah yeah some people may know this already, but I cant be the only one!

What benefits do you get from using STEAM and not just any torrent?

Used steam back in the day for counter-strike, but i mean for games with no multiplayer etc?

For some unknown reason I've never been able to get more than 10kbps download speed on Torrents. I've tried everything I can think of and eventually gave up. Newsgroups were super fast but I don't download much so cant see the point in paying for that.

If i download a game/album/film and actually enjoy it, spend time playing it i will go buy the original before getting into it. I can hit 1mb/s on some torrents though!

But they are starting to get wise about torrents and as such you might find demands for money coming through your door because using a torrent you are sharing the files back.

Newsgroups cost a little but you arent sharing the information so you are not liable for distribution if caught

If you dont do enough to warrant newsgroups then something like steam is brilliant because its legal and fast and available without getting off your arse to go to the shop :)

go to File - Settings - Downloads - "download region" and change it to something like Africa

Anyone else having problems with steam atm? Trying to buy Bioshock 2, I can log into steam fine but when I go to actually purchase the game it asks for a login and doesnt accept my account details...

Interestingly the steam support page doesnt accept them either
