Hehe Mike tuff luck really, steam seems a bit hit and miss.

Best thing to do is start from scrath, re-install HL and your mods and then re-install Steam.

Just a warning guys. Steam is checking cd-keys, I found this out because I changed my e-mail address (got it wrong first time) and Steam now belives my cd-key is in use by two people. They e-mailed me explaning that I would have to provide a new valid key to play -although I've not been banned yet.

Yeah when i installed Steam it said i had "Half-Life Platinum pack" and verified my CD key accordingly. I then got an e-mail saying that that CD key is invalid.

For a system built to manage the biggest online game in the world something "a bit hit and miss" would seem to fall somewhat short of the standard minimum requirement wouldn't you say?

Great. I've just got an email telling me to buy HL again because it wouldn't let me logon to my other account, so I created a new one.

Yeah dont worry about that mank!, I've got that and it hasnt banned me yet, I have e-mailed valve as I am sure hundreds others have with the same issue.

Morning ladies,

In a startling and totally unexpected move my half life session decided to start last night.
I was watching a movie in my living room and past my PC on the frequent visits to the kitchen for supplies. Each time I passed the PC I tried to start HL.

On about the 5th attempt it worked \o/
All other times it dinked with what looked like some kind of network timeout.

Ive gone back to using the email addy that I reg'd with at the start of the weekend and all appears well atm after sort of reinstalling the 2 mods (outside of the usual cs/tfc etc) that I had.

I'm guessing the problems we've been seeing are network related, the steam network just being overloaded with all the new reg's and downloads etc?

SOooo.... got all this again when HL2 comes out I guess

At the risk of repeating myself chums -AGAIN!- the servers for steam are simply not working well, and thats why most of the problems are around. DON'T keep re-installing ,if it comes up asking for your password, or saying you're under 13 years old , or whatever bizzare question, its just that it cant connect to the auth servers.
I played it for a couple of hours last night, it was fine, although all day it hadnt been working, and it isn't working now either :/
This will take a little while I think ...

Well,

I've now been trying to get steam (off my shit) to work for over a week without success :/

I've installed on two completely different machines with every version of the client that has been released and not managed to get any further than logging in.

As soon as I log in I am told that either steam is down or my net connect is goosed, I've monitored all the traffic that steam sends out to the net and nothing is getting dropped by either firewall (the 2 pc's are at different locations) and no new connections are inbound from the internet. To make sure I'm not a complete muppet I tried a firewall'less direct connection to the net and had about 15 failures in a row.

I've seen the 'updating steam' thingy once on either pc in the whole protracted soul destroying process, only to see it quickly bomb.

All in all I'd say my experience has been 'negative' or in more colourful language 'a complete ****ing mindfuck'.

Anyone else had this?

As you know Benny I have played 1.6 many times, but just as often it dont work. This morning I turned on my pc just to see it say steam updateing for ages, eventually locking up on 96 %.
I had to turn it off via ctrl alt del, then restart.
This time it stopped at 24%. I turned off the pc and went to work :/
Its people with isdn and 56k I feel really sorry for, they seem to have no chance at all.
Im told one of the biggest problems is that all the auth servers are in the US, theres not one in Europe at all.
Apparently a lot of Americans have had no problems at all.
Suprise ....
