Im still wondering if Mythic will do EQ's aka "Publish DAOC 2 since original game got ruined and has bad reputation" ;) If they do huge balancing (aka loads of nerfs) people will leave, and since it's "old game", no matter if gfx engine gets updated via Expansions, it won't attract new players..

Speaking from personal experience, I think you should ask yourself this question before jumping on the DAOC train. Do you really want to start all over and "grind" your way through something that is >basically< the same that you've been through already?

When I say basically, I'm refering to the fact that these games are very similar in that you kill monster X for Y times in order to gain level Z... or craft Q number of Ts in order to become master this-and-that. Is that what you want or are you looking for some more/else?

If you really like the old formula, but desperately want a change of scenery because you've seen everything there is to see in the other games, then go ahead and pick up DAOC. It's never too late for that and I'm sure you'll enjoy it for the reasons posted by several people above.

If on the other hand, you're craving for something new and different not only in terms of what to see and kill, but also in terms of what to do, such as more than just killing/crafting or perhaps combat that involves more than spamming the same styles over and over, then wait for the next wave of MMORPGs to hit the streets. Yeah, DAOC does offer PvP as something new and different to do over the other ones, but if you hate the grind by now, you won't have much fun because you're forced to grind all the way to lvl 50.

A final note - if you're coming from EQ, then you'll probably find the DAOC PvE to be rather... easy. I was rolling on the floor laughing when I fired up EQ after having played DAOC for half a year. By the almighty... I was getting my rear end kicked by blue mobs and aggroed all over the place because I had been spoiled by all these easy camp spots and short aggro range in DAOC :p

Anyone else think its ironic that all the pryd people call excali's '1337', when they are becoming 1337ist about their non-1337ness? :touch:

If anyone understood that, i'd be amazed. :eek7:

balls i posted a detailed reply but hit some wrong button and it got whiped.

so i'll just summarize wot i wrote.

pve in both games is a bit repetitive but in daoc it gets boring very fast because daoc combat is way more fast paced. this means theres no time to chat.

also due to the fastness, group coordination is nowhere near as big a deal in daoc as it is in eq. in eq, 5 mobs can be pulled and u all coordinate to get them killed. this could take 3-4 mins. in daoc 5 mobs pulled will be dead in a minute or so but so will 1-2 members of your group.

in short, eq combat is slower but better.

the daoc economy and bazarre just plain suck compared to eq for numerous reasons.

daoc pvp pisses all over eq pvp.

**************
daoc pvp pisses all over daoc pve so much that i regret experiencing pvp too early (24). if i hadn't discovered it i would have carried on my pve grind blissfully ignorant until i hit 50 to commence my pvp career. now i've discovered pvp, I just loath levelling up my toon and i've gained about 1 level in the last month.

give it a whirl, its only 50 euro's or so. just get to 50 asap so you can enjoy the thrills of pvp cos for us 2nd and 3rd time round mmorpgers the novelty of the grind has gone long time ago.

if you get daoc you will find that the 1st thing you check about all new mmo's coming onto the market is how is the pvp being implemented.

all of the above imo

i say start an try it out and stay if u like it :)
u dont need to be powergamer to compete in daoc and have fun!!
atm (until the 25th feb) u dont need to hunt items like in EQ to be good in RvR and there aint any completly rare items like in EQ (i heard that there should be some items there should do u nearly immortal)!!

for class choose a support or caster (as they r the most fun and caster will again be good in RvR)

in hib: warden, druid, bard or eldrith/enchanter (they serv the same job) (wardens and bards both get grps and can solo)
in alb: paladin, mincer, cleric or theur. (mincer can both join normal and stealth grps and solo)
in mid choose: shaman, healer, skald or spiritmaster as class :) (here r it only skalds there can solo, but shaman is maybe they most annoying interrupter in-game)

and too all there say w8 for WoW, i say dont i think WoW gonna be a big flup, but that just me :)

As mentioned. If u like PvP DAoC is the best there is. In most other respects it's a little repetetive but what MMORPG isn't ? That's what the genre is defined by :)

Actually i think you made a mistake to some degree comming here and asking your question. Not that there is really any other place to ask ;)
Very few new people finds their way to freddys house, or well they dont post very much if they do. So 99,99999999% of the people in here have played the game for a fairly long time and have some 50'ies and realm ranks behind them.
Being the wise person i am(or a complete nitwit) i have chosen never to use my /lvl 20 priviliges. So i have had the joy of leveling new characters up from scratch and i am doing so now again. So i know that there are new people starting this game all the time, because i keep bumping in to them. Do they all like the game, hell no, some of them quit after 5 minutes, just like some people did 2 years ago. But alot of them stay, true some of them move on to other realms, but new people keep arriving, that like what they see and stick to the game.
Anyway when you hear what advise, comments or wines people have in here bear in mind that this is mostly a comment on how they want things to be now, some of them have forgotten the fun and joy they had when they started, with making all the wrong choices, by exploring and discovering a new world. Because it is true, it gets harder and harder to discover new things after 2 years, although i still happen to fall over something now and then. Also i still have the other realms to explore, which i will do when i get tired of my dear old Albion.
In one of your replyes you talked about the end game and what you need to be in it(or what you feared you needed). It all depends on who you are. If you want to kill every enemy player you meet and preferably a dozen or so at the time, i suggest you find a first shooter solo game and get some good cheats for it. If you have a need to compete and have some unsolved feelings of low self esteem and you think you can get over this by killing alot of people, yes you will have a hard time in this game, there are alot of ground to cover to catch up on the 2 years you are missing. If you dont really have the need to be the best of the best, dont worry, there are alot of us still around, that doesnt really have a clue. Me for instance, dont have more than 1 account and could never dream of being powerleveled. Must admit i have a few spellcrafted really nice pieces of equiptment, but nothhing that fancy and yes i am enjoying myself and yes i actually manage to kill something in RvR from time to time.
So all in all yes please do come join us, new people is what keeps the game alive, cause they always remind us(well some of us) what the game is all about.

Hi G:

Firstly let me say that I played EQ (c. 5 years) prior to playing DAoC (c. 2 years)- and have also played EQ much more recently.

When it first came out DAoC had much that EQ didn't have. Faster transport; better graphics; the promise of much faster leveling and,its 'crown jewels' a clever PvP concept. EQ also had a reputation for being Evercamp as well at the time, Commons was packed with auctions etc.

So when it was launched DAoC attacted a lot of people - from EQ, including myself, from UO and AC. The play was particularly mature and friendly - so it was a good start to a new game. There was also the promise of something different in PvP.

Today in EQ of course you have 'instants', portals, translocators, the bazaar etc. It works better in many way. DAoC does not compete with EQ when it comes to PvE. There is, however, a new expansion - already out in the US and in Europe at the end of February. Many people are unhappy that it has turned DAoC into EQcamp - the EQ they remember anyway, not the EQ of today. It has also had a lot of bugs: think Sleeper when it first came out. This aspect of the game may require players to develop Plane raids - 100+ battlegroups, 4 to 6 hour battles etc. Not something that DAoC has ever really had. The new expansion may also make people concentrate mpore on a single character - as in EQ - rather than having a whole stable of characters (its a product of levelling being far faster)

In addition to a new expansion pack - which many believe has turned DAoC into an old fashioned Evercamp game - there is also a new design for the PvP element of the game. Lots of bug fixes being done on the new expansion and we do not really know what the new RvR design will be like.

The game is also quieter than it was at launch; the excitement is missing. Server numbers have been level since June 2003 (they peaked Feb-May2003) although these numbers hide an unknown number of buff bots (who stare at a wall having cast their spells on others).

So is it worthwhile. If yu want immersive PvE it won't be as good as you are used to. If you want PvP you will need to put a good few months in (and first characters are always hardest of course) before having a realistic opportunity to compete - at which point you may find yourself at a considerable disadvantage. You may also want to wait for bugs to have been sorted prior to going into the new expansion lands.

logged my zerk and played quite a few hours today.. omg u can actually get grps in the newest SI zones... as i said above i was putting things on the edge, but honestly the really fun part about the game is RvR... that's the only place something unexpected happens, sure bashing mobs are fun for the first 30 levels, but after a while that sucks.
also as mentioned above i was a real RvR nerd, having a filthy high rr SB and a buffbot does that to a person.. now im bored of the constant chase for the uber items and want to settle down with a grp char (if i ever get 50).
that being said, getting to lvl50 is a real nightmare, at least since im fed up completely by PvE wich imo sucks arse in daoc, ive played other online games with far better PvE, but in the end none existing game that i know of can match the action and low lag, high tempo player combats in daoc.
so to be truly honest, try it, love it, hate it etc.
i both love it and hate it, depends on the mood and success lately.

so if u plan on starting on midgard excalibur, note my name (Bloodaxe) and send a message if im online, ill set u up with some cash and some nice items to get u started nicely.
besides, daoc isnt the kind of game that u needed to start on release day cos in a matter of weeks or months when u got your first lvl50 (assuming it is a non stealth class) u will do great in groups and do not need 2+ accounts.
i would suggest a caster or light tank as first char, cos u might end up soloing alot from lvl1-20ish

berserkers are very nice solo class if u plan on going melee in midgard, troll or norse makes no huge difference, making a zerker make sure u do 10str 10dex 10con, some do 15str 10con.

its up to you what u wanna do ofc, my guess is u gonna love it, hate it, get addicted to it and enjoy it :)
