Star Wars: GB Competition Shambles!

On November 9th 2001 you may have noticed that the computer game retail outlet 'Game' held a competition on both it's own Web site and on Barrysworld itself that ran in conjunction with the release of Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds. The competition consisted of the following:

1. To fill in the blank: "If I was a Dark Lord of the Sith, I would call myself Darth _____" and send it to cjravey@game.uk.com
2. Eight entries would then be decided and on the 23rd November (yesterday) those eight people would arrive at the Game store in Harrow, Middlesex and basically play the new Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds game for a couple of hours and win the prizes as mentioned in the URL above. Even the runners up would win prizes to the value of around £90.

Seems fair enough no? Except it then becomes totally absurd. I arrive in from work yesterday at about 17:30 and quickly have a glance over what e-mails I have received during the day. And to my surprise, I have managed to get myself through to the last eight people to go to Harrow and play the game and win some goodies! But then lets see what time the notify e-mail was sent... Ah, midday. I've now got 30 minutes to travel down the M40 at the speed of light. It ain't going to happen.

How on earth could anybody hold a competition like this and only give people under six hours notice at the very least? Don't they understand that the majority of people do in fact work a normal 9-5 job? Even so, six hours notice would hardly suffice for somebody who lives miles away from Middlesex! 24 hours notification at the very least should have been given.

Which suspiciously leads me to believe that in actual fact it seems awfully convenient for any staff who want the prizes that would probably have to replace 90% of the 'winners' as I can't see that anyone is going to turn up on such short notice unless they actually live in Harrow.

I'm very intrigued over whether anybody who was sent an e-mail yesterday actually attended this shambles of a competition.

Yes, I am a tiny bit bitter. But I have every reason to be. Don't I?!?

Good good. I (understandably) replied to the sender of the notifying e-mail telling them how daft they were being for thinking that anyone could arrive in such short notice. I very much doubt I will get from them reply at all.

I wouldn't have minded getting my grubby mitts on a new keyboard and mouse either - not that interested in the actual game though. But then it's the principle of the matter isn't it?

Oh, and for what it's worth, I got through with this:

'If I was a Dark Lord of the Sith, I would call myself Darth Something-or-other.'

I kid ye not.

Compo - Apologies

I'm sorry you had a frustrating time of it Xpander - it was a fairly frustrating event for all concerned.

You were in the second wave of people mailed - as few of the original mail out responded - (hence 'Insert Name Here' entry was given a chance!;) ). I thought it was better to give people a last minute chance - although I was aware it was going to be extremely difficult for people SO last minute - than leave the GAME staff waiting around...

As it happens the GAME staff were volunteering to work late for an extra curriculum event, as enthusiasts. The suggestion that the thing was rigged for them to blag stock is fairly unjustified - and slightly Mulderesque.

Again, apologies, love, respect, all that. I take it this will do as a reply - if you want a mail, let me know - cjravey@game.uk.com

How cool. All official replies for anything seem to be posted right here on the forums, now.

I wonder if my MP reads this?

'Why are the road markings on the Army & Navy roundabout so shit these days, you bastard?'

*sit back*

*wait*

Roundabout

We will be announcing plans for the road markings on the Army & Navy roundabout, but unfortunately these come from next year's budgets, which must be tied in with European average spendings for your region.

Oh - and Geoffrey from Plymouth, your wife *will* come back to you, but first you must make a few changes, stop wearing her colthes, and dump that trollop Maria.

Fair enough. Just a civil, informed response is all we ask for.

Thanks very much.

Well I don't shop at other shops in Reading, so that's ok then.

I don't shop at any shops in Reading mind you, but that's besides the point.
