Whats the title gonna be?

"Star Trek: Return of the Franchise"

Though I kinda liked 'Enterprise' in its own quirky little way i'm not that big a fan of Star Trek. I always get confused about the whole "Mission of Love and Peace" shit, and yet they fly around on a ship with enough guns and lasers to turn the moon into a giant cheese toasty and pretty much use them every chance they get.

Anyhow, just my 2c - I doubt it'll be that great.

It's about 3 years away from launch. Should be intresting to see how far computers have progressed.

On the games site I check they said they wouldn't make a MMORPG explicitly but a multiplayer game that can be played with a friend too. the word MMORPG doesn't really came to mind when I read it. They also talked about planets and missions on it. But who knows... They bought most of the rights of the Star Trek world so they could make plenty of interesting games. It is time we finally got a new Star Trek top game.

We come in peace, shoot to kill, shoot to kill, shoot to kill.

Aye, some of the original ST was a bit confused where it was going but still, in amongst the melodrama there was sometimes some very good stuff. A lot of the current staples of SF were first aired to the public in the original Star Trek series, though even that stole shamelessly from A.E. Van Vogt and others. (So did Alien but thats another story.. erm, no actually its the same one ;)) Its easy to go "zzz seen that a million times before" but in a few cases the original Star Trek series was the first of that million. Another thing thats easy to forget is that the original series had episodes banned for going too far with its thinking - the first inter-racial kiss shocked people at the time.

Still an online game will be hard to make interesting. No economy as such, people striving to better their race rather than chasing individual needs.

Hmm they'd better include Klingons as a player race... at least then you get to beat the crap out of things and justify it as roleplaying :D

Jury's out, depends on era they set it in, and how they implement the 'culture'. To be fair, this is a tough one to turn into a game.

There are loads of MMORPGS going atm, sum of em gets cancelled before they get done (Warhammer Online, Dragon Empires) and some get cancelled after a year or so (Earth & Beyond)
It's a marked with very much competition, only the strongest of mmorpgs will survive.

Speaking of which, apparently there will be an annoucement soon concerning someone else taking over the development of warhammer online ;)

Covered on the BBC site too, and i dont agree Lumikki, the startrek franchise and fan base is as big (if not bigger imo) than star wars.

Ok, so based on that it may be a graphicaly stunning game with naff all playability... but i believe it will make the shelve.

I've lost my faith on all upcoming mmorpg's, that's why I'm sceptical. :)

Actually a player economy wouldn't be hard to implement as the Ferengi and other races use a monetary economy which the federation uses as it pleases.

err..

I'll get me coat...

but then, perhaps your "ship" upgrades would be gained through "helping" the federation rather than credits?

and items dont seem to have such a HUGE importance in star trek (they never seem to be searching endlessly for the tachyon beam of doom for example :p )
