Had to do 2 scatter graphs, 2 standard deviations, 2 pie charts, 2 spearmans ranks & 2 box whiskers. Then analyise them all.

I haven't even touched on the introduction, which is limitations, why you sample, avoiding bias.

Then an extension, involving more graphs and analysis.

And finally a conclusion.

I don't quite know the english terms ofcourse, so I haven' got a clue what "avoiding bias" and "why you sample" is. (if it were even mathmatic terms ) Limitations and extensions are pretty neat tho, and rather fast do do with Excel. You do are allowed to use Excel I hope?

Statistics coursework was horrible, i renember mine being 28 pages and was 1 of few things i put effort into back then. Me in my arrogance assume i get A* and so i ask teacher, did i get a*-no, an A* no. A B,-yes. was so embaressing as was in front of friends and i got owned by my arrogance.

Didnt matter though as i got an A* overall for maths.

If you have to use excel for statistics fair enough (not sure what level your studying at) but its generally seen a pile of shite for stats. If you get the choice try using something like Project R Fairly easy, free and used by the field leaders. Hf with the standard deviations

there is two types of STDEV in excel. well there is 4, but two you wont use. unless your a fucking weirdo.

normally you use STDEV and STDEVP.

STDEV is for the SD in a sample of the population. it assumes your results dont account for every possible occurance. so if i throw pasta at a wall and take 5 sets of times of how long it took to fall off, id use STDEV to work out the SD.

id use STDEVP if i knew with 100% certainty (ignoring all possible factors) that the pasta would always fall off in 5 seconds. so id take my 5 sets of 5 seconds, put it into excel, work out the SD of the population. as i know my data accounts for the whole population of possible results and it would never be different. (edit: although that site above contradicts what im saying. this is what i was told by lecturers and read in one of the hand books)

what SD trully means, im still working on comprehending. sometime to do with how much the numbers deviate from the mean and bollocks.

and how to do it as as simple as working out the sum of some numbers.

go into your cell, type =STDEV(x:y)

x:y being your set of numbers, like maybe A1:A4 etc

or you can use insert > function > STDEV

excel has nice and easy formatting for example. Ugly graphs tho :>.

Its quite advanced but I just picked up Statistics: An Introduction Using R which is a really nice book to help with a project I've got. But theres tonnes of free guides and tutorials to R on the internet.

Not that i've used it since uni. But it is the only stats package worth using...

I teach SPSS - the latest versions aren't really buggy but since it's recently been acquired by Microsoft that could change

Students get taught how to use the menu system though when most things are faster and more transparent if you actually write your own syntax for it
