appreciate a bit of help here.

Looking into a ssd maybe possibly

Probably a 500GB sammy evo pro or whatever its called seen it for 200 quid or so.

What comes with these things when you buy it. Will i need some sort of mounting bracket for it for my pc .. i would replace a 1TB drive with it probably so will have to fit in a 3.25 inch bay.

Will i need some sort of ghost software to copy my current c to the SSD and then just make the SSD the bootable drive in the bios i guess ?

Cheers

For the Samsung SSDs:

- the basic kit comes with nowt but the drive, a book of words and a CD with some "useful" software on it.

- the laptop kit comes with all of that plus a USB3.0 to SATA cable (meant for migrating an old 2.5" laptop drive to the SSD once you've put it in), a spacer to make the SSD 9.5mm high instead of 7mm (for laptop conformity) and, one would hope, screws.

- the desktop kit comes with all of that plus a 3.5" bracket (to put it in a standard HDD bay), and a bog standard SATA cable instead of the USB 3.0 to SATA one (I think).

If you're going from not having any of the brackets or whatnot, I'd go for the desktop kit.

My Kingston came with nothing at all and my OCZ also came with nothing...! Even if your drive of choice doesn't come with the bits they are cheap.

I really wish I had gone for a Samsung but the Kingston was half price at the time.

Edit, if you get one without a bracket they are a couple of quid. I have been super lazy and have one drive just resting in a bay without a bracket. Need to get one myself.

Personally I would start fresh on the SSD with a clean OS installation...

I believe much of the Steam game data can be backed up and restored onto a different disk these days - not done it myself though. Look into that if d/ling the games again is an issue.

It's a lot better to install windows fresh to an SSD, as it will get it all optimised from the start. I don't think it matters so much with older versions of windows, but 7 and 8 have SSD support built in, so it will hit the ground running, instead of spending ages re-organising and optimising, and probably still not getting close to what it could achieve.
As for steam, if you go into the game properties, there's an option to create installation files for the game, but if you have an external HDD, or another drive that's not being wiped, you can just copy the folder to there, then copy it back, reinstall the game to the same location and it should pick up the files that are already there, and just use them.

This.

I had the same dilemma when I got an SSD - "clone, or fresh". All the advice was to start over which I did. I had to hunt high and low for my Windows 7 disks, but it was worth it.

I ended up with a 128 GB SSD for Windows / applications, and a 1 TB standard HD for porn / warez documents.

I fucking love SSDs, everything happens in a flash - best upgrade I've ever done.

Samsung SSDs now come with cloning software. While basic, it works perfectly, can handle partition resizing, etc.

I moved my OS from basic hdd to SS without re-installing the OS (of course, I have more than 10+ years experience... even so, i still wasted like 6 hours)

And then I switched platforms, from AMD to Intel, and the lazy IT guy in me still didn't want to go through the hassle of installing everything over again. So I went ahead and backed everything up, and after a few runs of trial and error, my box purred like new, but with my old OS.

fact: I've only installed Win7 for my computer once.

Not a very good SMART status after 2 years of normal use in a desktop:

Its an absolute cunt to try and get server 2012 onto an mSata drive though. Thought I would jazz up the server with it after getting a replacement in my laptop but I get I/O errors on install.

Without wanting to repeat what the frog and dwarf said, definitely do a fresh install @Moriath
