You may be aware that Gator, one of the largest propagators (pun intended) of ad-based spyware has been forced to shut shop, even if only temporarily.

What made me laugh is the following, quoted from Gator CEO Jeff McFadden:
We are highly confident that once all the facts are presented in the upcoming trial, no court will issue a ruling eliminating a consumer's right to decide for themselves what is displayed on their own computer screens... Such a ruling would attack a consumer's right to use hundreds of popular software applications that automatically display separate windows while the consumer is surfing the Internet.
Excuse me? Is this guy talking about the same pop-up windows that make me want to stab people in the street? How about our fucking right not to have our web movements tracked without our permission? How about our right to decide for ourselves not to have unauthorised advertisements thrust in our faces? How about you fuck off, Jeff McFadden, CEO of Gh3ytor? "Popular software applications"? Spyware? Do me a lemon...

Fuck's sake...

/edit: Damn typo in the title. :(

Although I agree with all that you rant, I suspect that its not something to get too wound-up about. Apart from the webtackingtypebollox, that really pisses me off.

There. I've given your arse-hair a neat French plait with a little mousse for extra hold. You might want to wash with this conditioner daily and use my styling fudge for special occasions. I'm off to wash my hands.

If companies are allowed to send "adverts" to me using spyware then I reserve the right to know where that advert has come from so I can send them a little package of my own!!

You see?

This is what I mean. I was browsing the forums when a pop-up ad... pops up. Here it is:

gator.jpg

Knowing that BW would never sucumb to intrusive advertising (unlike GamesDomain - sort it out, Meg) I ran Ad-Aware and found 30 instances of this:

gatorad.jpg

These have been placed on my computer, without permission, just by visiting the fucking Gator website for research for this fucking thread!

Sometimes... I hate the world.

PS. I also just saw Spider-Man. It was shit.

I find it hard to believe that just visiting a website stuck all them on your harddrive. It would have to be a vulnerability with the web browser to do that i guess...

...You know the solution :)

Summo you checked out how to properly remove the software?

When I removed Gator from my system I had to remove the auto-trusted digital signature for it (You know the one that pops up saying "Do you wish to mark Gator Add Corp(c) as a trusted source?") if it was ticked as Always trust this source then when ever you go over a site with gator ads it will redownload and install.

I can't find the removal instructions but they are on google somewhere

Hope this helps.

As a test goto the Gator homepage if the ads on the site appear it has reinstalled itself
