Didn't want to steal it, as i "tend to do" apparently :)eek:), so i'm starting a new thread on it. Yei! Threads! :D

There was a point there on mutual respect, how the same consideration should be given by both parties, and many of that threads posters agreed that "Mutual respect good!"

Now, this is all fine and dandy, sounds great, but is it?

Is there such a thing as absolute mutual respect, or is it just a matter of...matter at hand?

Let's say smokers and non-smokers? Smokers can show respect by f*cking off to the cold/rain to smoke, but come at a smokers house/table and you suddenly have "a right" to a non smokey evening.

Shouldn't you be the one to piss off at the point of "lighting up" then?

I'm talking here about considerate smokers that is...

Or how about alcohol use? You should, by these respectful standards, respect someones choice to get plastered and puke his guts in the toilet. As long as this individual isn't hitting on your wife/tipping your pint au naturel.

So is there real mutual respect, or is this another case of "A principle i live on...depending."

Had one person come round my mates house a few times and last time requested we don't smoke.

The immediate response was "Well feel free to get out of my house" from my mate.

Mutual respect is all fair and dandy but if you come round someone elses house and attempt to set the rules.....well then...

Everyone who lives in my mates house smokes, I smoke and so do a fair portion of the others that come round, I do have to say though, not seen that person since, he seemed to be one of the "I don't smoke therefore I have a moral high ground over everyone else regardless of where I am" types.

Needless to say i'm glad we haven't seen him since! :D

I tend not to smoke in the house when my mum comes round, likewise i dont (and am not allowed to) smoke at her house. Other than that if people come to my house they can put up or go home.

Before the smoking ban someone asked me nicely to put my fag out because they were eating in the pub, i did so. You get people who are quite rude though so i just used to tell them to not go to pubs if they didn't like smoke (this is a village pub were pretty much everyone smokes at the bar)

I'm going to try give my opinon in one sentence =)

Mutual respect can only occur where theres a mutually acceptable state the confrontation can resolve to.

Oh that wasnt as hard as I thought it would be =).

Its hard between the smokers and non smokers as its not like only smoking half a cigarette is middleground hehe =)

But for opinons and points of view, then yeah I think it can exists since you can agree to disagree - or just not talk about it =)

Friends I have and myself run along this line, we know a few non-smokers, (Who we ask, before hand if they mind us smoking - They're fine with it) but when it's new people who say "please don't smoke" it's usually the same sort of thing. I mean, fine.. You don't like the smoke, but if you're going to a house where you know your friend's friends smoke. Prepare for it.

Mutual Respect will be given, when there's something to be mutual about :D

I have a fairly simple rule on the whole smoking rule.

In my house or my car there is no smoking, simple as... My place, my rules.
Although in my car it's my way on everything (route, music, no food, no drink, no smoking, no mud etc) unless theres a damn good reason not to (music seriously offends, feeling sick and need something to offset it etc)

When in someone elses car/house, if they smoke then I don't believe I have the right to ask them not to. Their place, their rules. If I don't like it then I'll find a different place to be...
