I am genuinely very sad now, one of my earliest(and far 2 few)happiest memories was of me and my dad looking at pictures in one of Spikes books, this was right before the time dad started to be a prick, god i really liked Spike Milligan, on the bright side he must of been 80 odd years old.

He was ill most of his life, I think thats where he got is humour from if you get me.If you haven't read Adolf Hitler: my part in his downfall , go read it you will laugh your bollocks off

Actually you need to read at least the first three books in the war series (I think there are six total), maybe four. They give a great insight into the man as they chronicle the start of his depression when he was hospitalised from shellshock.
To cap it all he also had piles, and the bastage commander sent him right back to the front when he had recovered, consequently he freaked out again, that developed into a serious mental illness that plagued him for the rest of his life.
The books are partitioned between funny, serious, sad and warm fuzzy moments, its by far the best historical account of the war from someone who was really there and under fire for most of it.
Also recommended are his Letters books, some of the things he wrote to people were so funny.

Never seen his work, but the clips tribute on the other night made me see just how great he was.
On the 'Good Evening. And here is an oil painting of it', I laughed my ass off. Oh, and the part where he was singing and the camera kept changing or drifting away was also maximum lollery.

hehe I saw that too. The sketch with the vicar who talks bollox for 5 minutes then sneezes and a shit load of dandruff and dust goes everywhere
Also the bit where he goes on Parkinson, gets introduced then walks in and says "I have a complaint" Parky says "What?" Milligan says "Leprosey".
Milligan was sheer ingenuity and madness given human form and was hailed as a legend well before he died, rightly so too. As Eddie Izzard said on Newsnight "He was the father of alternative comedy".
My fave has to be the falling man sketch from the Q series. With any luck they'll be out on vid/DVD soon, but its a shame that it takes his death to make this happen.
