Spending spree

OK, I get paid next week and feel like a CD buying spree. Only problem is, I've got all the albums I want currently and fancy broadening my musical horizons a bit. This board is full of a wide range of musical tastes, so I thought you lot would be good to ask!

A list of the albums I currently own can be found here. Only type of music I really really hate is hip-hop and rap. Everything else I can cope with :)

Advice please!

Tenacious D! They're funny and they ROCK!

/edit: To encourage and help you, I suggest you get it from here. Quick delivery and only £9.

/edit again: Seeing as you have a Foo Fighter's album, you might like to know that Dave Grohl is a huge fan of The D and played drums on their album. He even tagged along on their recent London gig which I done saw.

Can't help noticing you don't have any REM in that list. Try Automatic For The People to start with.

do a search of the forum for 'music' and 'best' or something. I suspect you'll get a nice cross-section of the best tunes of the past three years [and more]

I got bored of Fuck Her Gently and Tribute... very quickly tbh :/ I might investigate them, however!

I hate REM with a passion. My Mum has most of their albums, so I've been subjected to it. Cannot stand his voice.

Just tried that, got about four threads into the list and gave up. All of them had degenerated into slagging peoples taste off pretty quickly :) No doubt this will follow suit fairly quickly :p

Norah Jones - Come away with me, fantastic mixture of jazz, blues and even country, plus she's a honey to boot.

Turin Brakes - The Optimist LP, songwriting like this doesn't happen very often anymore, 2 guys with acoustic guitars singing how your life is.

Vines - Highly Evolved, aussie 4 piece, very retro sound, yet lovingly crafted harmonies and charging distorted guitars.

Beach Boys - Pet Sounds, the liner notes from Brian Wilson contain a quote that explains why this album should be in everyone's collection "When people listened to this album, I wanted them to feel loved" Put it on and you realise he was serious.

Eels - Soul Jacker, controversial picking this over Electro Shock Blues, but for me the eclectism of SJ wins me over, Pounding rock songs, string led anthms to Love and the usual depreciating Eels style all add up to a fantastic album.

Doves - The Last Broadcast, joint best album so far this year, nuff said.

Idlewild - The Remote Part, the other best album relased so far this year, Scottish rockers transformed into beautiful ballad writing indie heroes, top work lads!

Soulwax - 2 Many DJs, essential cd for sitting around with fellow music lovers and playing Spot the Tracks used. Cut and paste style mix album with frequent moments of breathtaking imagination interspersed with sheer comedy, sing with; I wish I was a little bit taller, I wish I was a baller...

Depeche Mode - Exciter, essential for so many reasons, feeling down, put it on, feeling up, put it on, people over, put it on, everyone seems to love it, handy that.

Massive Attack - Blue Lines, THAT song and the fantastic Hymn of the Big Wheel, an essential for everyone's collection.

Boards of Canada - Music has the right to children, bleurgh, blargh, what is it? Indie, hip hop, downtempo, techno? All of the above and more, another album that at times is so perfectly right, and even when it's not is still thought provoking.

Marlena Shaw - Best of, the best female soul singer ever, yes, really

Brian Eno - Before and After Science, the closest to tunes that the chill out master ever got, as relaxing as you'd expect, perfect sunday music (or getting stoned)

Underworld - Beaucoup Fish, techno like none other, pounding and peacefull simaltaneously in places, how does it do it?

I'll think up a better list when I've had a flick through my collection for 'essentials'

Playing rock music to a bunch of schoolkids being charged 20p is quite comical in it's own little way. It was hardly an exciting gig. Plus they were utterly shite anyway, IMO :)

Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegtables.

When I first heard "I Kill Children" (with its chorus "I kill children, I bang their heads in doors)) I thought they were just another daft punk band). Then I listened to "Holiday In Cambodia" and "California Uber Alles", noted the lyrics and noted that the band not only sound fucking A1 but the lyrics are v v v spot on politically and funny as fuck.

Too Drunk to Fuck is a classic too ;).

On an completely different day I would listen to Aphex Twin - got anything of his?

Windowlicker is a nice track. And if you're looking for comedic, novelty music, you can't go far wrong with Kevin Bloody Wilson.

Ahh, but I have plenty of credit left on my CC.. but you're right, I'm trying to avoid putting too much on it yet.

I recently bought in utero (got it on tape but needed a cd ver) and unplugged in new york by nirvana, both from play simply because i'm going on a nirvana fest atm, and they were so cheap :)

I've got Come To Daddy EP and Selected Ambient Works 85-92 both of which are very good if I'm in the mood.

Nirvana are great, though I think In Utero is overrated. Good album, but not a classic. Unplugged is very, very good mind :) Listen up Bryan Adams, that is how to make an Unplugged album :p

ps: snoopy, check your pm's :)

[edit: Also just noticed, nice sig snoopy - read Everything by Simon Price lately?]

I have noticed a lack of U2 - Achtung Baby on your list. Get it sorted, as it was easily the best album they ever did. Pop is also good if you want something a bit different yet a bit familiar.
