/me sets alarm to get up and post shite to entertain Cask at ridiculous times of the night.

If it is a server load query thingamiebob issue, then is there any way at all that the daoccie bits could be on a seperate box as suggested earlier, or is that a technical no-no?

Seems like the easiest solution to the problem on the face of it, (should that of course be the problem).

I'm still on isdn so it's all a much of a muchness for me *shrugs*

Yo yo

Quite an interesting thread to read is this!

Well the issue lies in the hardware, it is nothing to do with bandwidth.

Firstly, GZIP on the server actually helps. It is NOT a cpu issue.

Currently the entire FH forums including the SQL backend run on a single dual processor p3 650mhz server using UltraWide scsi disks.

This puts the system at a serious disadvantage when it comes down to disk i/o and memory.

MySQL relies on the operating system to cache the tables (the actual data) but can cache the indexes itself etc. Apache also needs its chunk of this memory and I have had to throttle both the applications down to a level where the system does not swap - makes it even worse.

I do have another piece of hardware that I need to commission but as Ted said, my new role has taken up a large chunk of my time.

Saying that, I have made some changes to the forums to reduce the number of queries the SQL server has to do to minimize disk i/o but that will stop not help if we get a sudden influx of 500 people coming here, especially if over slow connections as that will hold open an apache process (therefore memory).

Gah, I hope it makes sense, too early on a Saturday morning to get technical!

That explains it - we're running off of the spare space on Deebs's pr0n server!

:D

Ok,

have moved the SQL database to another server. Hopefully it should be more responsive when having more users browsing...

hehe :)

Will you be upgrading to vB3 RC4, Deebs, or just waiting for the final release?

Kind Regards

Jonty

P.S. This just popped up, hehe :)

Sorry, FreddysHouse is unavailable at the moment. Deebs is breaking things as usual, Ted is keeping a careful watch over him.

We will be back soon... we hope

The board closed message popped up as I just moved SQL.

I am more than likely gonna wait Jonty for the final release, according to the vb devs its a matter of days.....

Edit ~ I believe those figures disappeared this morning prior to the move, Deadmanwalking

To help minimise disk i/o, try memcached. Although it requires more memory for performance, something you seem to be low on. :p

Is the move why the number of users viewing boards etc isn't about anymore?

Nah, that is due to me changing an option. Noted in changelog :)

This will require testing as it involves code changing.
