Freespace 2 is on budget release, try searching on GAME as they may well have it.

Its the best space sim ive ever played, and should still hol dup today.

The mission where u go thru that jump gate, to be met face to face with a Sathanas Juggernaught coming right at you, and your wing commander just screams "DIVE DIVE DIVE!" was very cool ;)

StarLancer was also very very good, however I coudlnt find anyway of skipping the in game flight cutscenes, and that used to get very frustrating - watching them over an dover again.

The sequel is due very soon - Freelancer, which is kinda like Elite, but with a more direct plot.

Never managed to get there myself. There was one mission where you were surrounded by a ton of friendly ships, then a few mins later they all turned hostile.. couldn't get past it :(.

*SPOILER*

I know the mission, its when you've been sent undercover as an operative within the human bad guys, and they have foudn you out. They try and make you destroy a "good guy" ship full of civillians, and when you dont they all turn on you and kill you. Well They try and kill you, but if you survive for long enough, these super hard friendlies jump in and destroy them all and get you out.

When I replayed the game, I just shot all the "enemy" ships whilst they were still non hostile to me, so as to give me the advantage - they all turn hostile when you destroy the first one, but its better to start with them 1 down and you behind them ;)

i got stuck on the first spec op mission, annoyed the hell outta me trying to blow up the ship AND some asteroids *sigh*

and i did manage to make the last mission. Just requires me to kill the bombers. then divert everything to engines and leg it there. tis annoying, because then some of them spawn near the jump iirc.

ah well. Just wished the game could've been a little bit longer

I still think the best bit of Freespace 2 is when those big freaking beam weapons start firing.

BEAM weapons...

Yummy.

aye. their amazing, just watching them strafe along the side of capital ships, piercing through to the other side. excellent.

of course not so good if you fly into one which just so happens to disable communications AND engines :(

Nah I think its something to do with the way the unpacker converted the MP3's to WAV files :(

The beam weapons surely killed you in 1 hit outright? Used to annoy me from time to time cause id get caught between 2 capitol ships.....

The little anti fighter beams are well done tho, the way they fire in 3 round bursts, each round knocking you off course and spinning your ship, just getting control in time for the next round to hit you..

Oh and the flak guns were good! oh.. it was all good!

Anyone know if theres gona be a freespace3?

...

saying that, i think i've only ever been disappointed by one space sim... naturally enough the one i was most looking forward too;

digital image design' Inferno.
had a vhs cassette with an Inferno and TFX (tactical fighter experiment) video on it free with some magazine, literally the day i bought my first 486... i fell in love with it... it looked so beautiful... so fast, so smooth... so exciting... with a stunning orchestral soundtrack....

and then the time came, and i bought it :/

oh what a shallow, and indeed utter pants game it was in the end :(
