Space sims?

A long long long long long long time ago I played a game called X-Wing, on my trusty 486sx25 it was at the time awesome.
Basically flying around in an Xwing shooting the baddies, with a degree of tactics, and ship configuration involved.
Is there a current game that is similar to this, lots of shooting, some tactics, and mission/campaign based, without being a true sim?
The old game was good but with basic graphics, there must be something newer that looks pretty as well as having good gameplay.

On a totally unrelated note, I remember having so much fun in Space Simulator, launching the shuttle into space, and flying a spaceship on the surface of mars.

Tie Fighter ruled btw.

Hmm X-Wing: Alliance is a bit old now, but might be worth a look. It's basically a touched up X-Wing vs Tie Fighter with a better single player campagin.

I've was looking for a decent space sim myself not so long ago. Think I gave up in the end, as they had withdrawn X-Wing Alliance from the shops before the budget release.

*EDIT* Thought I'd add this this one still seems to be the best space sim from lucasarts. All the others are crappy console ports and tend to be a bit limited.

Why not pop along to some abadonware sites and grab X-wing and Tie Fighter. Failing that, the Independance War series can be quite good, space simy wise.

Nah!

If I'm going to play a space sim I want one with superb graphics and addictive game play!

I'm not sure I've heard of a single new Space Sim all year. The last one I played was Wing Commander: Prophecy. Not bad at all.

I-WAR 2 is pretty good.

Very long missions, splendid graphics, proper space physics and a good story line

Another vote for both freespaces. They're fucking awesome, the scale of some of the ships is immense.

diddnt you hate the last mission of freespace 2? could never make it in time.

and god do i hate those juggernaughts(sp?).

tie fighter gets my vote for the golden oldie. have the collecters edition CD installed.

and yes. some of the ships in Freespace 2 are fucking maaaaassive (does the Super Star Destroyer in XWA compare? i thought that was rather large but havent played it for ages). and did anyone else think the colossus was crap?

if your into dogfighting then freespace 2 is for you.
i prefer tie fighter as it has a mission basis e.g. you could be patrolling around a base, scanning cargo of passing ships. when a cargo container full of illicit materials arrives and then it all goes to pot. any may i say that the Gunboat is an excellent ship
