Okay so I recently found the game freelancer on my shelf and tried it but sadly it didn't work. Anyway, I was only gonna try it again for a bit of a laugh but it got me wondering. What happened to this genre? Are there any new games of this type out with a single player storyline? Discuss! :D

Sadly...no.

The genre has somewhat died and no longer is the "streamliner" in the mass market. Only reason games like Grand Theft Auto should be hated; they brought a new trend and killed the interstellar radio starburster.

GTA is a good game, but not a patch on X-Wing Alliance :p

I looooooooved those games from Lucas Arts! Defender of the Empire even more than X-Wing. I was soooooo proud when I was Vaders wingman!

Wing Commander > all :D The third one was absolutely fantastic. I have the game box for that on the shelf too but I'm not sure whether I should install it or not. It might destroy my memories of it :(

I played WC 3 on my very first PC... some Amstrad thingy... I was quite frustrated when I visited a mate and realized the massdriver was a rapidfire gun. Hell, I had to delete parts of my DOS to make WC 3 fit on my harddrive.

i think there is a game called "X3: Reunion" aswell had it for a while before winter holiday but havent played it since. It was a really pretty game, amazing gfx. sadly my comp couldnt really handle some of the more stressful situations (and i didnt play very far cause i had to go away for 1 months :p). Here is a review of the game

X3 is very pretty but stresses your comp and the storyline isnt too good.
Basically i think of it like elite.

Going back a bit i really liked Tachyon (bah spelling wrong i expect) and the Bora had nice storyline and the last 3 missions were a challenge.

Going even futher the best game in existance is Star Control 2, which some people have redone for xp and its on free download, ive mentioned it before so a search might bring it up.

ye, but apparently accoring to the review Egosoft knows about this and has released alot of patches that removes bugs/improves framerate. Quote from the review "With that in mind, I seriously recommend not even trying the game until updating to the current patch (1.3 at the time of this writing), and the game will be reviewed under this patch."
