I tried to download it, it got to 5% and then the little icon disappeared. I have no idea how to force it to download the service pack again. Anyone know?

You cannot download SP2 manually, otherwise I would have done that...

Odd. Are you using Professional Edition? If so, the Windows Update release isn't out yet (only Release Candidate testers and Home Edition have that so far). If it's really screwed, there's the 260 meg network installer, which you download and run standalone. Most of it'll be redundant, but it'd work. Depends if you've got the bandwidth for it I guess.

There's no difference. The network install covers both Pro and Home editions.

But I want to know why the smaller SP2 for Home Edition hasn't installed and where I can get it.

There seems to be a problem with the automatic updates system. Probably related to the huge size of the files it has to download. Microsoft seem to be releasing it to people in small bits, to prevent it overloading their servers etc. If you go to Window's Update in IE it confirms that it's in progress, and that there's nothing you can do to speed the process up.
You can either wait for automatic updates to get it done, or you can download the larger network install. Just to clarify, it's basically a larger file, containing everything an admin might require to install SP2 on multiple machines, including home or pro, and updated vs unpacthed machines. So it's a larger download, but will do exactly the same thing to your machine. It's up to you whether you want to wait, or download it.

Correcto :D

SP2 "Network Install" (260 Meg) contains every single patch for Windows since Service Pack 1 was released. Which is a lot. It's a waste, as if you keep your system up to date it wont install much.

"Automatic Updates" scans your comp first to download only what it needs. However, as Jo rightly says, Automatic Updates seems to be cacked right now so if you've got the bandwidth and/or patience, you may as well just download the "Network Install". If you're on Broadband, it'll probably work out quicker than waiting.

That's a little inaccurate... SP1 contained every fix and pack until its release, SP2 does the same, meaning it contains every patch and fix for Windows XP since it went RTM, including Service Pack 1/1a and everything it brought.

It's worth downloading just in case you ever reformat.

I'd quit whining, chuck the URL into reget (www.reget.com) and get it installed... oh, and burn it to CD 'just in case' ;)

You might be in luck Mellow, overnight I downloaded and installed SP2 off windows update, so if you keep looking at windows update regularly it might appear. Also, if you have already installed the critical updates then the chances are the SP2 download will be significantly less than the network install (mine was 75MB as opposed to 260MB). It'll still take a while to obtain as it has to "prepare" for download (?????) and then verify the download before installation, and I have no idea how long that takes, but its less than 8hrs as it was done when I woke up :).

n0ob time, how exactly do you do that ?

Do you need to use something different to the auto update ? I have never seen a 'do you want to save this and where' dialogue when using the auto update facility.

Or am I just being incredibly thick ?

Well for some reason SP2 is now appearing on Windows Update. So that worked. Nothings changed except the annoying windows firewall trying to hoard in on my real firewalls action. Works fine. :)

Well the link I supplied earlier in the thread was to a full downloadable copy of WindowsXP SP2 - so I guess you'd burn it to CD by putting the file onto a CD-R using XP's built in CD burning support and hitting the write button :)

aha, that'll be a result of Microsoft's "staggered release". Don't worry about that ;)
