Blueray is over rated shit anyway... whats gonna happen is they will put all the ps3's out at xmas time thinking they will sell hundreds of thousands... when infact they wont sell anywhere near what they think they will... main reason? the average middle class family simply cannot afford to dish £425 in cash out for one considering the average family has 2-3 kids... 3 kids to buy seperate presents for etc i think not sony drop it £150-200 and it will sell... £425 and your just going to get laughed at and told to fek off

After proclaiming that Sony's next-gen console would be "expensive" many months ago, Kutaragi this week went so far as to say that the PS3 is actually not expensive enough. "It's probably too cheap," he said. Apparently, he thinks that playing a PS3 can be compared to eating at a fine restaurant—you get what you pay for.

Shame I prefer a Kebab than paying £30 at some fine restaunrant that wouldnt fill me up!!
Nintention have teh right idear with the Wii, ranther than spend the money on producing Hardcore technology that adverage joe cannot affort.. ooo loook at the prity colours!
They are innovating this time, and I think the Wii looks fucking fantastic so far :)

£425 and your just going to get laughed at and told to fek off

Die hard fans will still shell out the money and just live with out food for the week lol. and im better that 425 is with out a Game, so your prolly looking @ 425+ 40/50£ for the game on release day also is that the 20Gb verion or the 60Gb verion ? cuase the 20Gb verion of the console is missing quite a few things sony said the console with have this and that and now, its missing have the stuff and if you want the 20Gb verion you loose more shit aparenlty dam bastards.

£425 will be the expensive one cheaper one should be £100 less??

The reason the cheap one loses alot is because its meant for computer literate people who will link it to a pc over a network and i belive you can save content to remote disks on it. The CNN news letter says if you have a network new the consol get the cheap one plug it in and watch movies and shit off the pc. If its no where near your network or you dont have one get the expensive one :)

It is still bloddy expensive but atleast this consol will last 5 years again befor the ps4 can you say that about the xbox or the wii?

And sony will always say its too cheap Panasonic previewed thier bluray player at $1800 or something stupid.

I will be buying a cheap one on release if the network stuff turns out to be true.

In all honesty i don't know why people think £425 is that much, thats still going to be the cheapest blu-ray hardware on the market that supports all the DRM features and enables you to play the drm protected movies, and you get a shithot games console as part of the deal. No idea why everyone is whining

I paid ~£400 or so to have my ps2 imported on launch day as sony didnt give me my pre ordered one, so its no big deal imo. Nobody is forcing anyone to buy one :p

Blu-Ray, what a joke

Blu-Ray Writer £900

Blu-Ray 25gb write once blank £30

Blu-Ray 25gb rewritable blank £40

Dual-Layer 50gb media not even beyond basic R&D stage yet

DRM?

Blu-Ray offers ZERO managed copies, effectively denying the consumer fair use. Even HD-DVD backed by Microsoft amongst others allows for 2 managed copies, ok the capacity is slightly less but the hardware and media costs are 1/4 of Blu-Ray and it offers 99% of what Blu-Ray does but at a price affordable to the consumer. It is also much less restrictive.

PS3

People like John Carmack and Tim Sweeny recently admited that PS3 is a pig to develop for, the raw power is there but tapping that power is going to take years, the architecture is so different from anything else around past or present that it will take 3-4 years before they start the realise the true potential of the hardware.

The cost is prohibitive to say the least, the hardware actually does justify the price though but the Xbox 360 offers very similair performance at what will be half the costs (£199 for premium package) by November. Alot of parents won't pay £425 but they will swallow £150 for the Xbox 360 core package. I honestly believe that the PS3 is a day late and a dollar short BUT it will still sell huge numbers. Not PS2 numbers but 40-50 million over 5 years is easily obtainable if the price drops at the same rate PS2 hardware did. It will sell like hot cakes to start with, the PS zealots and Sony diehards will make the first 5 million fly of the shelves, after that though I see hard times for Sony until they can get the hardware below the £200 and into the £150 sweetspot.

sure thats great but with xbox 360 being established and going into direct competition with Wii at xmas they dont really stand much of a chance, unless they have a shit hot software release list, not seen anything that impresses that much tbh, except a pre rendered mgs4 movie and a high res version of ps2 GT4

Microsoft is losing about £200 per X360 unit, Sony is absorbing around a £150 loss per unit but the Blu-Ray drive is what is keeping the price at astronomical levels anyway. Getting the costs down to under £300 any time soon is going to be a mammoth task for Sony and they are haemoraging so much money at the moment right across the entire company with Samsung eating them alive in the consumer electronics market, they really don't have money to be wasting. Microsoft on the other hand have never made a penny of Xbox or 360 so far but they still turned in $4 billion profits on $12 billion revenue for the last 3 months. They can afford to throw as much money as it takes, Sony are just about breaking even these days because the R&D costs have gone through the roof and the Koreans are dominating in areas where Sony used to be king.

Cheaper one will be £50 less but will be crippled in many ways sadly, the lack of digital HD movie playback over HDMI for example so people will be forced to use composite cables and settle for 720p.

I wont buy anything with DRM built in and that includes vista.

Totally agree BUT as I said earlier, at least HD-DVD does allow fair use even if it is still somewhat restrictive. HD-DVD are trying to play fair but still protecting thier investment, Blu-Ray is all about screwing the consumer.

The price is not surprising

Only a matte of time before they package HD TV's with playstations

I don't play console games much what with a busy job and the family. So won't be getting one anyway.
