Apple came, they saw they wiped shit on everyones face.

If it can do what it says it can do... ouch... The joint venture of Apple + Google or "Applegoo" must be a bit scary to all the handset makers etc

It's got an "i" at the front of it's name. It's made by Apple.

Therefore it's obviously shite - only for the avid iPod, iVibrator and iInflatableBridget fanboys :(

Speaking as someone who sells phones for a living, it doesn't do anything the SonyEricsson W950i doesn't do, and that's been out for a couple of months. In fact, looking again I'm pretty sure the W950 does more (handwriting recognition, 3G, better battery life). The iPhone hasn't got a camera which will make it unappealing to about half the market (we don't do many W950's cos it hasn't got a camera), and at that price, it won't be avaliable free on a contract any time soon - figure on about £200. If people were happy to pay that much, my job would be a SHITLOAD easier. I mean no doubt the Apple brand will mean people will want it, I just see a lot being dissapointed when they're asked to fork out for it.

The video isnt up on apple.com yet but BBC have a small clipping:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6246063.stm

To be honest it looks amazing from that clip. I *really really* want one. Are we going to have to wait for a euro launch or can we import in june?

edit: Bodhi it has a camera though its only 2MP

OK I take the camera comment back, however I've now seen the European launch date (about 12 months from now). It'll be pretty old hat by then.

Exactly what I was thinking, it looks great now, the camera giving it one over the w950. However, Nokia and Sony will have phones just as slick by the time this hits Europe. The n95 already has all the camera + mp3 + net + gps features that you could want, and that comes out in 2 months.

Precisely. The N95 looks a stunning bit of kit (it'll also have a price to match) and as I said, the w950 has been out for a while now, boasting 95% of the features of the iPhone (and a few it doesn't) and better battery life. I wouldn't be shocked if the w950i's replacement raises the bar again.

Watch the n95 tho, every single Nokia n-series so far has been taken off sale by Vodafone because of software issues - we just pulled the n93 last week, the n91 lasted about 3 weeks til they all started coming back, the n80 was a bit of a disaster and the less said about the n70 the better. If it works it will be stunning, but don't get your hopes up TOO high. Nokia are getting better and better at letting us down.

Apparently it has "the most advanced web browser ever on a portable device". Wifi sounds rather snazzy.. Google maps too? I know you can get GPS on smart phones already though.

Lets not forget that it has, or rather is, a fairly big screen.

Never really was too keen on ipods, got a W800I myself. This looks very cool though imo.

But, but, it's revolutionary, it will change the way everyone uses phones..

Or like the ipod, it will take an idea already done better by other companies (compaq and creative to name but 2) and give it a wanky design for meterosexuals and fashionistas to drool over, will double the price, lower the featureset and battery life and everyone will love it because Steve Jobs tells them too..

As for the media center they are touting, it doesn't appear to add any value to the 50 upnp media splurgers obn the market and appears to be at the higher price range...

Just goes to show, apple are very good at smoke and mirrors and talking the old bs, but they can't come up with new ideas for toffee!

Opera mini is fantastic, and Google Maps is available to download for any phone too :)

Yaruar sums it up tbh, it doesn't appear to add anything to what's already available, the i-mate phones such as t-mobiles MDA range seem to do what it can already.

You forget I work in sales for Vodafone, I see what phones are doing well. At the mo we're doing loads of K800is and W850s cos they're the best people can get for free (not to mention the fact they're the best on the market). Both cost around £300. If as I suspect the iPhone comes in at around 450-500, it won't do anywhere near as well as you think, as people in the uk simply won't pay for a phone. We offer the Nokia 8800 Scirocco, which goes for around £700 without a contract. People still expect one free (on a £20 a month 12 month contract....). It's also a complete and utter bag of shite.

I have a W950 and it's the dogs, it really is. I don't miss the camera because I have a camera and never really rated the 2mp offerings on the k750 and w810 in comparison anyway. I still haven't got used to the keypad yet (handwriting text messages & emails is quicker for me now, although I still can't seem to do punctuation reliably) and it would be nice if you could just write a number to dial on the main screen rather than having to use the keypad but it's no major hassle.

The phone can be a bit sluggish around menus, I've noticed. And hitting the back button out of an application doesn't close it, you have to go into the task manager and do it. All minor problems really. And I got it for a steal, so I can't complain. :)

The iPhone does look spectacular and, assuming it can do all it promises (and not just be pre-retail hype), should be successful. As has been said though, it's still a year away and I think the W950 and some others are ahead of it on some aspects even if it was released tomorrow.

I think the main reason I'd get one of these is the interface. I like the idea of having no buttons and just using my fingers to move around all the menus. I'd imagine it'd be like holding a thin, light PSP.

I do like the fact it senses when you hold the phone to your ear and turns off the screen.

People here keep saying that it doesn't do anything new, but is there anything with even a similar interface?
