some rage at vista (or all doze) mediasharing

after a day and a half of general rage at the idiot way Microsoft has implemented the controls to their media sharing features in Vista, I gave up and followed instructions on the web to install TVersity. After disabling all doze sharing features, configuring Tversity and allowing it's mediaserver through the doze firewall, the PS3 spotted it right away.

Adding stuff to share is easy enough, and you can configure the proggy to upscale or downscale according to your needs. I've given it 30 gigs of hdd space to play with, and currently it seems to be chugging away doing whatever it does to my music, videos and pictures. Also the upscaling that I've configured seems to be working fine: my HD shuttle movie that Big G posted about in general now plays at 1080p instead of 720p, and still looks pretty decent to my eyes.

thus, shameless plug. anyone else have thoughts on the subject?

I just have a HD STB which connects to my NAS over fast ethernet, works pretty well, but I'm waiting on MKV support.

You're not streaming HD video over wireless are you? You can get problems with bandwidth if you do that.

hmm I see what you mean. though atm the only HD content I have on my pc is the shuttle spaceflight HD movie, which is 10 mins long or so. TVersity has upscaled it from 720p to 1080p, and that plays more or less flawlessly afaict.

if you have a link to any free HD content that I can test with, I'm curious to give it a go. Atm the PS3 and my computer are the only devices on the wireless net in my flat, and I was thinking that 54mbit would be enough, surely?

You'll only notice it with 1080p content really. The problem is that, as with all networking technology, the 54Mbit is only a theoretical maximum, you'll actually get a lot less than that in real life, and 1080p content needs about 25Mbit for audio and video. If you are only using it as a point to point link you should be ok, but be wary of adding any other devices, or at least using them whilst streaming the video. If you start getting artifacting or lose sound/picture, it's most likely to be a problem with the wireless.

Dunno if TVersity can do quicktime, but there's loads of 1080p trailers on the apple site.

Hi TdC

I personally haven't had any problems with Windows' file sharing, but I've never tried with a PS3.

Just one query, if bandwidth becomes an issue, could you stream at 720p and let the PS3 do the upscaling?

Kind regards

Jonty

P.S. That picture makes me think the rest of your flat is empty, hehe. No furniture, no pictures, no plants, just your home theatre (and some beer? :D).

I could actually have the PS3 do it, cheers Jonts, though my scaling is set to auto atm.

As to the flat, it actually is empty. Look ye to my blog for reasons why :)

What I was going to suggest.

Will be watching this thread; I am an avid PS3 / wireless media sharing fan.

I don't stream hi def video. My 1080p clips (downloaded from playstation store) are all stored locally on the PS3.

I use Nero Media Home and its brilliant tell the scout the files and fiolders you want to share and it works.

I connect my PC to my PS3 with a GB Switch in the end and it looks really nice.

how does that work G? you're saying it's well worth the time to copy content over to the PS3?

hmm 200mbit, and a set costs 159.90 euros. I'll need two sets, so 319.80e, and I'll never have minging wireless problems again, ever. that's actually smashing imo, though I'll have to leave the wifi on for an eventual lappy. However, the main points that need to communicate will be able to do so swiftly and with the continuous connection that is wired. hmm.

If you shop around a bit I'm sure you can get them cheaper, yes cat5 would be cheaper but also more of a pain esp for fancy men like Tdc :)

Nah I don't use the PS3 to stream content; i'm not one for poor quality / downloaded media, i'm quite a videophile. I just have 1080p "eye candy" clips stored locally on the PS3. It's just easier.
