The idea of the singularity is that vast leaps in technology could happen within a couple of years, if a superhuman computer entity is created, becuase this computer could then improve on its own technology the technological advances would happen. This may be scary, but its likely to happen within the next 50/60 years.

Very good, something I ponder a lot, the big problem is that you can never prove a computer is self aware,it may say it is, it may act like it is, but it (and it's the same for everyone) only knows if it's self aware, you can't prove it to me and I can't prove it to you.
I may be the only self aware being on the planet and you are all mindless robots pretending.

The big question is can self awareness just be constructed from inert material or does the human mind 'grab' it from some unknown place?
