Sociology

Being a qualified sociologist, i find DAoC very VERY intresting. Which is why i still read these boards. Most of all how people manage to feel some kind of superiority over other players just because they are members of these so called elite guilds.

Just thought id share.. see if anyone else sees this too.

If i was to make an assumption id think that it was to make up for a lack of superiority in there real lives..

I can also understand why people would resent these people for having these unfounded beliefs. Why? Are they as silly as the people who belive they are superior?

And why do people want to amass wealth which they can not by material things with....

Its an endless list..

hmm i get upset mainly of the followers really...
with that i mean the wannabes that must run around and kiss ass to the so called uber ones.

BTW i did post a thread long time ago where i claimed that the playstyle ingame was reflecting how they was IRL.
Wanna comment briefly on that ?

Amass wealth...
Well according to a american study the 1 gold in UO was among the 100 most valued currencies in the world...

So basically a ingame char is more wealthy then a whole family in ..like africa...
Thats rather amazing....

I think this applies to alot of the suck ups you talk about in your post Eneq.

Do they feel superiour or do you simply think they do? I would really like to see the basis you draw your conclusion on - give me some quotes. If you have nothing to back your statement up with other than your feeling on the matter then... well i hope you get where im going.

thats a little cheap isnt it? pop-psychology 101.

DAoC is a game, apart from a good time and an escape from reality that we all need on occation - humans (like all animals) learn by playing.

Imho this is inherent in many, if not most online games. This being my first mmorpg, my experiences are mostly in the fps genre of games, but you can see many of the same types of things on these daoc boards as you did on q3 boards, for example.
I don't think it's the game, just the competitiveness of people generally ...... and also I think the anonymity of the net, where people do or say things they wouldn't do or say in real life, i.e. put people down publically without a thought for their feelings, pretend you are something your not ...... just generally get away with murder because no one knows who the real person behind the BW/DAOC nick is. It's a licence to be as much of a git as you like and get away with it, for some I think.
Maybe I missed your point, I'm no Sociologist ;)

am i an example of someone "putting down" people publicly and without regard to their feelings? or did you mean something a bit more spesific? didnt you just "put down" all the people in the elite-guilds as you like to call them in your first post aswell? atleast i had the decency to quote you so everyone could read what i drew my conclusions from.

and discribing a behavioral pattern based on a persons self-asteem and imagined social value is as much an area of psychology as it is sociology so i would prefer it if you rolled your eyes at someone else.

How nice of you to say so.

Whats your /play again?

I have no idea why i should have to defend myself like this.. but im waiting to go out to play football.

Ive not stayed in once this week, i usually only watch tv or go on my computer after 8 o'clock now a days....but ive not been staying in. Football tonight for a small team of mine, tomorrow im going to a friends gig in london... I like to observe people yes, and to be quiet honest i passed my sociolgy exam after going to 25% of the lectures.. i got a D. Im still qualified, even if i do know jack shit! And i still find this mini world of DAoC a slight reflection of how some people act in real life, but on a much smaller scale!
