Took over an hour or so to install, register etc, then the "preparing to play" took 15 mins and said "error, the steam servers are too busy"

what a crock of shit :(

Same here. Not exactly 'consumer friendly' is it? Having said that, I'm enjoying now its finally up and running. Surprised how good it looks with my low-rent gfx card (GeForce 5200).

These are inevitably problems caused by lots of people downloading from steam at once. It wouldn't be an issue if more people had preloaded. When I started it up this morning (about 0930 GMT), it was quick and easy. Now that the americans have woken up, thats where all the bandwidth is going.

It will clear up in a few hours, mark my words.

Think about what your saying there. Could you imagine your local games emporium saying "will you all fuck off and come back later? We're full. And why didn't you come earlier and buy the box before the rest of the game arrived?" Its like I've said elsewhere, the slack fanboys cut Valve is unbelievable...

Okay got past the see-saw bit, now I'm stuck in two rooms without an apparent way forward, one had a valve that could be turned ... no idea what to do to continue, and I just died in EQ 2 which means I am rez sick for THREE DAYS... so I'll be playing this instead. Please don't make me have to stay in the watery room of boredom!!!!

This happens every day believe it or not. It tends to be called 'the queue for the till'.

if its the place i think you are talking about, turn the valve and the water will rise, then climb back up the ladder, into the previous room, then you swim under water thru a tunnel (i think)

Funny, I don't remember ever queuing for a till for an hour (except in Ikea ;) ) and then not get served anyway... That's it! That's who Valve are, the Ikea of games developers; shoddy service, DIY games, ridiculous queues, but everyone keeps going back for more.

One clever thing I noticed was, after suffering from appalling keyboard and mouse lag, I reimaged my system using my Ghost backup.

The Ghost image is a full (clean) system, but without audio drivers (I forgot and can't be arsed doing it again).

I started HL2 and noticed that as there is no audio, none of the people in the game 'speak' with their lips. Not even matey at the start... he just stares.

right, im tearing my hair out here. Im on the part where your in that hovercraft thingy where you travel through the water and acid. Im at a couple of closed doors in the water type thing that I cant open. I get out of my vehicle, run up to the top (right side if your facing the doors in the water), run through the buildings killing all the enemies. I eventually come to a wheel that im guessing you turn to open the doors but its broke and I divent knaa what to do. ANy help?

if i think it's the bit you're on, there's a fence to your right with some explosive barrels - shoot them and stuff explodes opening the doors

Just to play devils advocate here...

This game was supposed to be out over 2 months ago, since then there has been a fairly hefty hl2 update patch (2 that I can remember)

I know its easy to point the finger at valve and say 'It's Your Fault MoFo's!!!!111' etc etc but I don't think that they thought, for a minute, that vivendi would sit on the gold of the game for length of time that they did.

Personally I got the game via steam and I feel for the people who bought the dvd retail. At the end of the day I think I got a much much better deal cos I got to play cs:s for the last two months.

I got home @ prime time from work. Unlocked game files then went and played cs:s :D
