Big big grats ! - must be one of the greatest things in the world.

I saw this on the other thread and thought it's a thread for discussion type of thing. Didn't want to hi-jack the thread(like some people say, you know who you are) and steal some thunder, but i did want to discuss it. So here we are.

Is it really? Or is it just a personal preference?

I personally could think of plenty of things better then getting one of those "bundle of joys" in my life. Let's say, a lottery win would suffice. Or, a really high paying, no stress job. I never really "got" the idea of kids being such "miracles" as they are(seemingly) always painted out to be.

It's pretty much the biggest thing you and another human being can achieve together.. Making new life

Yes, they can and will be a hassle, but after raising them I am sure you'll be looking back and thinking "Wauw.. That was the greatest thing I've ever did! Now give grandchildren!"

Can't wait till I decide to get kids with someone and start raising them :D (boys please!)

i think its one of those things, you dont understand till you have one

Like dinging your first lvl50?

That's the thing really, i couldn't even begin to imagine ever thinking of maybe having one.

So how could i imagine to look back and think "Oh wow, that wasn't a complete waste of time."

And i don't think it has to be "One of those things you have to do" to know. Seen plenty of kids being raised, seen 'em grow up, and someone said it really well:

"If a newborn child, or a really young child, doesn't wake any paternal feelings in you, it's safe to say you won't like to have one."

And he added:

"If it does wake some other feelings, i might have to shoot you."

But that's neither here nor there :D

I think thats bollocks tbh - I'm shit scared of other peoples' children, and always have been. However, I always knew I'd want my own kid(s) at some point, and now I'm pregnant I'm certain its the right thing to do. However it doesn't make me like other peoples' children any more. I have no desire to coo over peoples' babies, or smile wistfully as a father and son walk across the street hand in hand. I am however very much looking forwards to bringing up my child in a good environment, and instilling what I believe to be appropriate values. I'm also looking forwards to sharing things with him, such as my enjoyment of computer games, being outdoors, motorbikes and all the other stuff me and feller enjoy (well maybe not everything).

While I really wouldn't want to bring the people on this forum's attention to another forum I frequent, there's an interesting thread about feeling maternal...

Mumsnet Discussions - Is it normal that I'm pregnant and as maternal as an ironing board? (Pregnancy)

But you can't very well have one and say then that "Oh, well, i don't like it."

You have to have SOME(the keyword in what my friend said) feeling towards those nippers to even consider wanting one.

Naetha, i know what you're saying, but you must've had, like said above, some inclination to have one, as i don't think anyone would just "well, i'm bored, let's make one and see." and push one out.

That's kinda the point, that it's a personal thing, not a general "must be" thing.

You're such a hippie that the copyright mark(that i frequently use too) isn't really needed :D

Just made for a good discussion.

Like i've said though, if i do get a wee nipper, it'll be an adopted one. One reason being that it'll give a nipper a home(aww) and the other that i can skip the years 0-4 annoying phase(you bastard!) :D

I wasnt sure how good a dad I would be (I've got a daughter aged 9 and a son aged 6 now. We've agreed that 2 is enough for us :) ), but if someone came to me now and said I can rewind time 10 years and you can decide if you want the children that you have now or an alternate life without the 2 kids but with a £10 million lottery win I'd choose the kids (I know thats a pretty stupid argument but hey ho). They have brought so much into my life and made me much more of a "person" than I ever was before they were born.

It really is something you can only understand once youve seen it. To hold your daughter in your arms minutes after she has been born. To hear her first words, to hear your son saying your the best dad in the world, there is nothing in life that I have experienced that has made me feel as glad as I am to have the 2 children I have.

I have also drunk too much wine tonight, which might be why I'm typing dribble that normally I would keep to myself (men arent supposed to be emotional are they :) )

I, for a long time, didnt think I would have kids, but there was a moment when I just felt I was ready. Im sure this is something that will hit anyone. The right partner, the right time and bam, itll hit you.

To me, I still attribute most, if not all human emotion towards our basic primal instincts. Back when we were cave men/women etc. Back then, having a child would be important to ensure the survival of the human race, hence the instinct people have to have a new one.

The current thing is, the population is starting to get a bit high so it'd make sense that not everyone would want a child anymore as it simply isn't needed. I can think of many people I've seen who should have never of had a child. While it's not really moral in the sense to stop them having kids, it sure as hell wouldn't hurt humanity if the chav down the road DIDNT have her three kids by the age of 16, now living off of all the benefits donating nothing but more arrogant kids who will in turn, probably not contribute anything more themselves either and turn out like their mum.

Sorry if this offends anyone but I'm personally fed up of people having kids just for the sake of an easy lifestyle and not giving them the life they should deserve... instead, they're tainted into being the new age wankers who will do nothing but cause others greif in their lifetime.
