I'll be looking for a new (used) small car in the news couple of weeks, just wondering if anyone has any recommendations. Probably 00-02 plates around 4grand. I don't do a huge amount of travelling but I do have to sod off down to Wales every 6 weeks (600 mile round trip). I had been thinking of cars like Peugeot 206, Saxo, Fiesta but any pointers would be appreciated :)

Do not get a Saxo. That is all. Or any French car, unless you have tiny women sized feet.

If you're going to be doing regular long runs I wouldn't recommend a Saxo or a 206 tbh (both quite tiring). With four grand you could get a decent Golf or Focus Diesel.

Yeah, don't be getting a small car for long trips. Very tiring, you want a good turbodiesel for motorway miles.

Oddly that's the 2nd time someone has mentioned a Focus to me, I hadn't really thought about it. Previously I'd driven down in my Clio (not my current car) and it was ok. Must admit something a bit more roomy might be in order, might well have a look at the Ford Focus or something of a similar size :)

4k will get you either a Corrado VR6 or a Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo. Both far more sensible suggestions than a Focus Turbodiesel.

you can get a good size Golf TDI mark4 for around 3k i think, leaves you with 1k for insurance, look good - drive amazing and theyre economical :D alternatively you can pick up a VW passat for around 4k, get yourself a late 99 TDI sport estate (120bhp) and your laughin :D
