Well I pay for a 2Mb connection and for the most part I have had no problems with it. But in the last couple of days it has been really shite.

I have tried a number of online bandwidth tests and they're coming out anywhere from just slower than a 512Kb line to around 200Kbps download speed, in this last case it was actually slower than my upload speed.

This is not all though. In CS:S my pings are around 200 tonight, these are worse than my old 56k dial up. This seems very odd as even at 200kbps it is considerably faster than the old modem.

Probably this is just a fault with the line, and it'll be sorted in a day or two, but could it possibly be a fault with my router? It seems to be working properly, but I just want to be sure before I start getting into arguments with my ISP.

According to the support site as a result of a 50:1 contention ratio I should be satisfied with anywhere from 2Mb down to 400kb, it is only if it falls below the lower figure, on a regular basis that I can complain! I would be mighty pissed if I was regularly only getting 500Kb from my 2Mb line.

Any thoughts?

It doesn't happen to e BT does it. Because I'm having exactly the same problems with the same game, both CS:S and CS. For the last two nights I've had huge pings.

Just tried them and they're showing I am getting 2mb of speed. But it doesn't explain the lag I am getting on games. What router do you have?

I have a Netgear DG834GT. It is usually no trouble.

I am hopefull that it is simply a local problem that'll be sorted soon. We did have a couple of episodes recently where we had no ADSL at all for a short while, and my gf has been trying to go to her computer course for teh last 2 nights and can't because they can't log onto their LearnDirect server. The course is run very close by and almost certainly uses the same exchange.

All in all I guess I just need to wait it out.

Just done the ZDNet one and got 1237kbps so things may be getting back to normal.

Thanks Laz,

I just wish they'd let people know. They are quick enough to send e-mails telling me how good their service is (and to be honest I rarely have any issue with it) but when things do go wrong I'd like them to let me know.

Hopefully it'll be sorted soon

Thanks for those links guys. Neither of them suggest that there is a problem with my local exchange though.

This is getting more frustrating. Last night I was seeing speeds as low as 200kbps, 25 kbytes/s! This morning I start it up and I am getting pretty much the full 2Mb.

Is this purely a contention issue? Why would it start so suddenly? Up to a week ago I was perfectly happy with my connection, I never bothered to check the speed because it was fine, now it is OK early morning, but all evening, and up to 2:00am last night it was as slow as a dog. I feel like my line has suddenly been joined by 40 kiddies all downloading porn solidly all evening :(

BT say that on a 2Mb line anything from 2Mb down to 400kbps is acceptable due to contention, though frankly if I was getting 400kbps regularly despite paying for 2Mb I'd give up and go back to dial up *.

The problem is that for gaming, well CS:S anyway, I am getting all sorts of problems with high pings even from a connection that appears to be pretty much as fast as the 512Kb ADSL I first had. Why should this be? My ping never goes under 60 and hovers between 60 and 80 with spikes to 150!

The e-mail I sent BT last week has gone unanswered, and the site is particularly unhelpful when it comes to ways to complain, or even seek decent help. I want to talk to someone not send e-mails into the ether that only ever result in automated replies. :(
