I've just had a pre-order email from Sky. They've announced the prices for Sky HD; £299 for the Sky+ HD box and an extra tenner a month on top of your subscription.

A few months ago I was pretty sure I was going to get this, but I'm not so sure any more. All the Sky One HD stuff (like Battlestar) is available, um...elsewhere,(and earlier) and the movie stuff will be nice, but probably not worth the money. I'm beginning to think it might be better to bin Sky altogether and just get Freeview plus a HD media player (like the Kiss DP-600 or similar). Thoughts?

299 is a pisstake - considering you can do it all on a PC from dell for 400 quid - youd expect a purpose build box without the extra pap to be considerably cheaper (granted the extra chipsets/royalties needed but still)

I'm not into pimping my company here, but the Telewest box is either £50 install or free, depending on various options you take.

Then again, they don't have a whole lot of content at the moment.

Yeah it is, you can get it on "Universal HD". As Sky is one of the production partners, I'm reliably informed that it'll be one of the showcase series Sky will broadcast in HD.

Or coverage. I'm in a particularly backward part of the NTL network so I'm not holding my breath for a HD cable box in my area any time soon.

I'm going to hold off on Sky HD for a few weeks and see if they confirm they'll broadcast the World Cup (the BBC announced plans to do HD World Cup broadcasts today); if not I'll probably wait.

I can't see Sky not getting the coverage for the World Cup in HD. Its the only coverage I've got confirmed at all at the moment for our service.
