I'm absolutely choked up about this.
This is the guy who got me interested in astronomy in the first place when I was a lad. I'm really REALLY upset right now.
He was an eccentric character, a television icon and inspiration for astronomy to many MANY people. He's one of those guys who is truly going to be missed.

Shame - he was a real one off - still he lived through some of the most exciting times astronomy will ever see so pretty lucky on balance :)

It is a shame, although I saw the most recent Sky at Night and he did look a bit worse than normal.

Great man with a superb kick of the ball.

RIP, he started in the stars, lived with the stars and now returns to be with the stars again one day.

What a character and what an interesting life.

I didn't realise, he was offered a place at Cambridge when the war began - he gave it up and lied about his age to join the RAF.

That's storybook material :) Hero.

Great British eccentric. He actually wrote some sci fi novels too, which I read years ago.

Rest in peace.

yeah thought that as well when i watched it.

i would think that chris lintott will take over with paul abel as co host, hes pretty much been groomed for the job over the last couple of years.

a sad loss for both broadcasting and science in 1 package:(

Bugger. I used to love astronomy as a kid. Still, good innings.
