yesterday evening a mate pointed out to me that I have no music that could be classed as "optimistic", "happy" or "not gloomy in general" in my cd collection.
looking through the hopeless mess that is my pile o' cds I note at a glance that he may be right. this naturally sparking a discussion on what happy music is exactly. I mean, a perky, up-beat, disco-esque song that has "feel good" all over it but happens to be about the liking (or not-liking) of one's self. is that "happy music"? what about a slow dirge that is about great loss but ends up with the singer discovering that he is a better person because of it?

looking into my collection I note bands like Radiohead, Tool, Jeff Buckly, Nick Cave, Rammstein, U2, Lamb, The Smiths. even things like Travis, Sigur Ros, The Prodigy and Bran van 3000. Aparently this music will depress me, thus claims my mate, making me mope about with a face like someone shot my cat.

so....musicologists of FH, I want some happy music. preferably not made by shiny plastic people or young american girls. answers on a postcard please...

Well, alot of people find sad music catharic(spelling?). The thought is that if you witness something tragic (old greek tragedy) by the end of it by seeing all this misery endured by another you are somehow cleansed and feel good about your self. Atleast I think that's the reason I prefer music that's not obnixiously happy. That music just pisses me off. Ofc there are degress to how much you should expose yourself to it, im sure you'll be more prone to be gloomy if you listen to gloomy music in the long run.

Anyway, happy music. Ehm. Hmmm. Cant help you on that front. :)

Ah wait. Paul Gilbert - Acoustic Samurai, happy acoustic guitar shredding with abba covers and crazy jap girls singing "I am satan".

The Polyphonic Spree.

You'd be hard to find a happier selection of music than the stuff they make. Plus it has the advantages of actually being good! :D

Lots of stuff by the Flaming Lips. Some of it is quite melancholy, but in a sweet, uplifting kind of way. Yoshimi is a bit sad and death-fixated. Get the Soft Bulletin. That's very happy-sounding.

Also, Lemon Jelly. Might be a bit too light and happy for some, but it works for me.

Electric Six - Fire. All their songs are about sex, dancing and devil-worship, and they almost all contain the word "fire". Dick Valentine even manages to rhyme "microwave oven" with "commence the lovin" in one of the songs :).

Some older hip hop like A Tribe Called Quest - very laid back and cool, doesn't take itself too seriously.

Oh, and the Beach Boys, obviously. If you can handle that level of American saccharine.

You like some quality stuff there Teedles. Fuck what people say, if someone told me to stop listening to Jeff Buckley I would kick them in the tits.

Happy music is overrated and shit. Listen to Tool or summat, they aren't so bad.
