Avoid.

Avoid. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.

Big discussion thread on avforums.com

Just to say I am the latest to get stung (you'll see my post). I was in the market for a new camera body as my sister's wedding is coming up in a couple of months and I need a higher resolution for large pictures that I might be doing. Simplyelectronics had the best price for the body (£500, it's usually closer to £560), and since they were affiliated through Google Checkout and Amazon I thought they seemed perfectly reputable.

I ordered my camera, got an email confirmation, but strangely the order never appeared when I logged into the website. I was sus right from the off, so wanted to cancel it and get it somewhere else, maybe even locally. I tried to phone, noone answers (turns out, noone ever gets through now), so I emailed them to see if the order was received. The next day, they advised it had been and they had taken the money. I also paid for express delivery (it was deemed 'IN STOCK') which was 1-2 days.

A week later, no sign of the camera body. I started to worry and googled them and came across the thread on avforums, only to read about things not being delivered, refunds not being given, wrong goods turning up, imported stock delivered from Hong Kong. Now I fell like a fucking tard for not doing my homework, but since they were used by Google and Amazon I thought they would be fine.

After all I read, I sent them an email telling them to cancel the order immediately and to refund the money to my card. Stupidly, I ordered via debit card.

Anyway, I panicked more and called my bank who raised a transaction dispute for me because I made all efforts to try to cancel but they still took the money. The bank will return the money until the end of the dispute which may take up to three months.

I emailed them again telling them that I had done the above and that I would pursue it legally if I didn't get my refund.

Barge pole.

What has Trem's willy got to do with it?

Sorry :(

Duly noted, even if your post was just an excuse to use that cool 'shoot me in the head' smiley...;)

if you used a visa debit card you could do something called charge back .. the banks dont advertise it but it works like a credit card almost

Visa Debit Chargeback - The Facts | Consumer Information

some details for you

Thanks Moriath.

I was aware of Visa Charebacks but didn't realise now that all banks had signed up to it. It's the process i'm going through right now with my bank in that i'm disputing the transaction where my bank will obviously contact whoever deals with their transactions (someone like Barclaycard Merchant Services probably). It's quite a slow process, but from what I've read the outlook is quite positive in that funds are typically recovered. On the flip side, merchants are getting the shaft because this process almost always favours the customer. Good for me.

I shall let you know.

Thanks Moriath.

I was aware of Visa Charebacks but didn't realise now that all banks had signed up to it.

Any bank that signs up to Visa has to participate in chargebacks - the 3 month thing is only if the merchant disputes the chargeback (i.e. the merchant posts a chargeback reversal).

By the way - Visa Debit has all the same protections as Visa credit cards so if you never received the goods you will get your money back full stop.

The dispute process will just resolve wether your issuer or the merchant will end up paying.

Edit - The merchants unlikely to really lose out - he'll just subtract it from any money hed usually pass onto that acquirer.

Essentially they are just another Hong Kong import company, they are always hard to get any sort of help etc from.

Finally got resolution on this.

I had to pursue them through a Visa Debit chargeback as mentioned above.

Hats off to my bank who promptly gave me my £500 back, then the bank pursued the funds from Simply Electronics. The thread over on on AVforums.com has cooked up a lot of attention across the web that even the company themselves have contacted AVforums regarding all the negative press. Allegedly, they appointed a contact, someone called Vanessa to deal with people's woes. I sent her an email and it turns out they didn't dispute my chargeback, so I have got my money back after three and a half months. Sadly, there are still a load of people with no money and no goods, getting nothing from customer service and noone picking up the phone when they dial the number on the website.

Once again - Simlpy Electronics - AVOID like the fucking plague.

Some people are a lot worse off by ordering upwards of £4k of kit only to see fuck-all.
