I was at home today and the door bell rang and it was some delivery company with a parcel for next door who was out. Asking if I would sign for it. Not a problem I thought although the box turned out to be about 4x2x1 foot in dimensions. It looks like its part of a boiler or something. Anyway the guy that live next door returned home and I went and knocked on his door to say I had his parcel. He looked at the name and said it wasn't him and hadn't ordered anything. I had assumed that the person it was addressed too was the landlord but he said it wasn't him either.

So I am stuck with a great big parcel which nobody will claim. Am I entitled to open it to see whats inside and if there is an invoice or something with details of who it should really have been sent too?

the only company that will be screwed is the sender.
the delivery company will say we have a signature, the "should be" receiver can say not here.

Don't think you should open but if you have the delivery company's name and number contact them, but they will mostlikely not give a shit (yes working for one ;)
just saw that you dont know who the company is.. you didnt receive a carbon copy of what you signed? weird tbh who sent the package? might steal the sender for my company hehe
