Conquer the New World with more than 640KB of RAM
For those who you who’ve arrived late to the Sid Meier appreciation society, perhaps through Civilization IV or Pirates, Firaxis has a new treat for you in the form of a remake of the classic early 1990s turn-based strategy game, Colonization.
The new game will use the Civilization IV engine, and is marketed as a Civ IV title, although you don’t need a copy of Civ IV to play it. The original game’s creator, Sid Meier, said that the remake of the game was mainly a result of pressure from fans of the original. ‘We've received many requests from fans over the years to bring back Colonization,’ said Meier, the director of creative development at Firaxis Games, ‘and now seemed to be the perfect time to do that.’
Firaxis promises that the remake will be a ‘complete reimagining of the 1994 classic’ and that it will also offer more than Civilization IV in terms of graphics. The developer claims that ‘Colonization is a total conversion of Civilization IV that combines Civilization's addictive "just one more turn" gameplay with all-new graphics and features that add more depth to the franchise.’ Among the new features are a brand new interface, improved diplomacy options and modding tools.
The original Colonization only required a 16MHz 286 CPU and 640KB of RAM, and was similar to Sid Meier’s first Civilization game, except that you had to run a European colony in America between 1492 and 1850 with the aim of controlling the New World, rather than trying to run the whole world from ancient times to the 21st Century. Although it was widely adored by strategy fans, the original Colonization attracted criticism for ignoring the impact of slavery on the original colonies, but no mention has been made of correcting this in the remake.
Like the original game, the new game will also allow you to play either the French, English, Dutch or Spanish. In the original game, the computer played the other countries, but we’re hoping that the remake will feature multiplayer options for this. According to Firaxis, Colonization players ‘will be challenged to guide their people from the oppressive motherland, discover the New World, and negotiate, trade and fight with both the natives and other nations as they acquire power and fight for freedom and independence.’
The game is currently scheduled to be launched as in Autumn 2008, and currently there are only plans to release it on the PC.
X-Com is excellent.
Although not as good, but did anyone see X-Com: Terror from the Deep was on Steam for £3? was tempted but at the same time I knew I had the old DOS disk somewhere
on X-Com note, did anyone ever play Laser Squad Nemesis?
X-Com: Terror From The Deep is freeware i think bud. I have it and use a dos emulator to run it (dosbox i think). Sometimes you just have a craving for some old skool turn based strategy action
Never played Laser Squad Nemesis, was that an X-Com game?
Is this it? Is this the Colonization they were posting about or is it just a civ 4 version to keep us interested in the interim?
