It sounds like you may have a resource file missing, or corrupt. It might be worth connecting to DAoC and selecting the 'check all files' option.

Alternatively, I believe some people have reverted to an earlier version of detonator drivers with some success.

Braky: You should be able to remove them from Control Panel (Add/Remove Programs).

Spyf: I would certainly try updating your drivers. Maybe set your desktop resolution to 16bit also. Is a weird one though.

FWIW, I'm having the same problem, and have been trying to get it working since Friday lunchtime.

Here's just some of the things I've tried:

- Most of the detonators from early 20's through to 42.xx (beta ones that I got from 3d guru)
- Reinstall of SI
- DirectX 9
- Upgrading the BIOS
- Swapping cards around in case I've got an IRQ conflict
- Dropping hardware acceleration in dxdiag
- Taking off all the fancy graphics options in SI
- Windows XP SP1
- Latest 4-in-1 drivers

Things I haven't tried:
- Removing the soundcard
- A reinstall of windows XP (the other PC's in the shop having a dodgy PSU looked at right now, don't want to risk it)
- Complete reinstall of daoc and SI
- The old TNT2 that I had in the system before
- Dropping GPU clockspeed

Same problem every time - get into SI, really slow to pop up other characters on screen, then it crashes to desktop. The problem shows up in the error log as:

game caused an Access Violation in module D3D8.DLL at 001b:019bc007.
Exception handler called in main thread.
Error occurred at 2/22/2003 16:31:42.
C:\Games\Mythic\Shrouded Isles\game.dll, run by *****
1 processor(s), type 586.
384 MBytes physical memory.
Read from location 33800019 caused an access violation.

Which suggests a DX problem, but I've tried older versions of the dll and everything.

If there's a patch that fixes this problem after I've spent the best part of two days looking at it, I might scream.

Something that should solve your pb : delete game.dll (or a bit safer : move it into another folder, not the SI/DAoC one).

nop ....

ive tried to remove the game.dll file like you said , but the game downloads it again and as soon as i get to the character selection screen it goes back to windows ....

btw some guys avec resolved that problem by putting a GF2 mx , i have tried with the gf2 mx but still same problem ... ( i have put my gf4 ti 4600 back now )

ive also contacted rightnow , they told me to send them a Dxdiag ....

ive done it ... but i think they won't find something to resolv that problem ... i think DAoC is over for me if that problem isnt resolved :(

cant play SI becoz it crashes as soon as i get to the carachter screen selection , and cant play classic DAoC becoz it crashes a lot while i play ( freeze etc ) , every 20 minutes or so

Just got this response from rightnow.

Hello,

To correct this error, you should reinstall the game and open your update.dt (using notepad for example), and replace everything by :

For DAOC
Mythic Patch
193.252.123.21:1280/updates/english/camelot/mpatch.dat

For Shrouded Isles
Mythic Patch
193.252.123.21:1280/updates/english/isles/mpatch.dat
193.252.123.21:1280/updates/english/isles/mpatch.dat

This is due to a problem with the patching server. Hopefully this is now corrected. Sorry for the inconvenience.
If you are still experiencing some troubles, can you update this mail?
Regards,

European Dark Age of Camelot Customer Support

Will try this later and hopefully solve the problem.

Braky - Not sure if this will fix your problem too but worth a try I guess.

Leah - If this works then you need to do this too.

Solution - well worked for me

Had frustrating afternoon setting up Shrouded. Re-installed 2x, checked update.dat, etc, etc.

The solution that has worked for me is installing the latest Via 4in1 driver 4.45v from the Via website from here:

http://www.via.com.tw/en/index/index.jsp

Shrouded now up and runs past the character screen, and seems to be fairly stable. Well at least it runs now rather than crash to desktop.

So here is a question people:

Are all you who are having problems using Athlon chips on motherboards that use Via technology Northbridge and Southbridge chips?

The new drviers may be the answer. If it does not work first time then re-install the Via drivers again, they can be a bit shaky.

Hope this helps.

Very successful solution for me

Just been running Shrouded for a few hours and not one crash. This include high detail and medium water reflection with occassional updating of the effect.

So it was quite heavy graphics demand.

So the 4in1 update definitely solved the problems for me.

Would therefore suggest it is a driver problem for others.

Hope this helps.

it's a know issue with VIA chipsets, and the reason I shy away from them. their AGP support isn't as good as it should be, making this sort of behaviour all too common. always try and keep your 4in1 drivers up to date, else you'll experiense this a lot with 3d games.

Finally got it working last night by using the detonator 40.72 and not the latest drivers (41.09). Not one crash and running on highest settings. Hope this helps some peps.

The evidence points to driver problems

Svartmetall, the evidence from me and the person who changed their detonator drivers does seem to point at a driver problem.

I know this may not help you immediately as you probably have been installing and un-installing every driver you can think of for the last few days. And jumping around al ot in frustration.

One last thing is to drop the speed of the AGP in the 4in1 drivers (from Turbo to normal) and on your motherboard through the bios settings.

Also through bios maybe setting the speed of the RAM to a slower safer setting may help.

Also have a final think about drivers and these other items - I have done a quick brainstorm:

- motherboard drivers e.g. 4in1 - are you sure the update worked? Did you choose the right settings at update?
- graphics card - if detonator put settings to the default (e.g. for open GL and anti-aliasing). Also did they install OK?
- sound card
- is anything over clocked?
- check device manager in Windows - any yellow question marks indicating things not running properly e.g. modem, lan card etc. Its amazing how one PCI slot with a dodgy device in can upset lots of others and their IRQ requests.
- powersupply - GF4 cards take up a lot of power. Unplug any USB devices or other devices that take power through PC. Maybe Shrouded means that you graphics card pulls more power than your system can handle
- any other software on your machine not working properly or causing grief - e.g. Imesh, IRC, Quicktime, Realplayer, . Some of these plug ins are very good at currupting files
- any demo games from magazine CDs not worked properly. Again free demos can cause loads of grief.

Sorry out of ides now but after my experience I do think that there is a solution. It was like a miracle with the 4in1 upgrade, from completely unstable to stable.

Best of luck

Houston, we have a weiner!

2 reformats and lots of swearing later I *think* I have finally done it. I was using 3dMark to try out the new settings and it ran through the entire test without crashing which is a damn good sign. :)

Now I just need to reinstall the game and make sure it all works. If it doesn't then ... fuck SI! I quit! :D

ive got same problem as you all, kicks me out to desktop within seconds of getting into the game, even the old non-SI client kicks me out after 5-30mins. Tried everything mentioned here, nothing makes the slightest improvement :(

wtf is going on? there must be loads of ppl having these troubles so surely GOA/mythic or some1 has f*cked something up cos i for one have no trouble running any other games with my current setup.

very frustrating, very annoying.

tbh, I am pretty fed up with mythic AND goa, they all have problems cant work together etc........why is this ? I rly dont know, ok it must be hard, but if its hard and not possible then why even bother. First they fuck it up with a patch from mythic ( witch I find a load of crap ) then the acc register servers cant handle the presure ( like they didnt knew that was gonna happen ? didnt they had the same prob on us ? ) and now ALLOT of peeps cant get SI up and running........and after 2 weeks ( ? ) that SI is released they STILL dont have a sollution ? oh come on, I mean this is the biggest load of crap I have had with a pc game EVER.

/em goes off still yelling

Ok the porblems these people are having now have nothing to do with SI, its a hardware/drivers problem. ViA chipset's have known problems, some can be solved by driver update's some can't. I'm sure GoA will try to help but in reality they can't do much. If you have a ViA chipset and have these problems try the updating drivers etc, and hope it helps. If you still have issues and have an ati9700pro, that could be the problem, the ati gfx card has problems with ViA chipsets.. try swapping gfx card with a friend, and see if that solves anything..
