This reminded me of an incident that cracked me up (happened while ago so please forgive the vagueness in places). Small guild group was in Barrows and one of the players was 10 years old. He agroed as group was passing through a room and killed the mob. Guy who was camping the spot lost it and started swearing and being abusive about how that was his mob etc. One of the guild group told him to moderate his language as the kid was only 10 and the kid pipes up "Yeh fuck off you wanker!"

Nobody is perfect, however too many people think they can hide behind a PC and abuse people, sometimes they can get away with it, however, at least we do have recourse, it may not be perfect but in DAOC we do have recourse.

Its called RightNow, I would be gbsmacked if GOA did nothing when presented with a racism claim, or somebody that was continually pelted with verbal abuse in the game.

/ignore & /filter is fine and I have mentioned that, but unsolicited verbal assaults go beyond the remit of /filter. /filter is there for a reason, that reason is to cut out idle banter it will not stop somebody harrassing you if they wanted to.

It seems that Cyber Assault is alive and well if people have to come into this game with fireproof overalls each time they play.

If I call somebody a "fucking wanker" in game, I'm calling them a "fucking wanker" in real life. There is no seperation because this happens to take place on the net, does it make it less real because its carried on electrons over the net?

DOAC gives people a degree of escapism, however, its still played by Humans (mostly), I am the first to admit that its an escape from reality for me (For a large part) I still dont run around like a spoiled 16 year old abusing people.

oh and you'll find that most of the swearing in an online game is done by 8->12 year olds, because they generally can't do it in their home so they do it at school and anywhere else they cant get found out by parents : eg: computer game.

The cold hard fact is your son is going to know words that you know and even more words that you never knew by the time he's 10.

If you don't have the guts to call someone something in real life you shouldn't call them it in game. As being offensive to someone in game will not hurt them any less than if you said it to their face. Only difference is that person being offensive is hiding behind their computer doing it.

sure i have the guts to call someone something in RL, same as ingame, except mainly if i know u in rl it would take a lot more to get me angry because i dont wanna hurt someones feelings etc that i know - but in game i dont care, if i dont know u and ur being a total twat then im gonna tell u.

Well I doubt very much that your'e in the majority there, I suspect that most people in real life faced with someone much larger than them, that they don't know, who is doing something dumb isn't going to start mouthing off at them. And if they'd only do it against someone smaller than them then they're a coward.

Also most of the abuse that I've seen in game isn't cos someone's being a total twat, its cos they've made a genuine mistake which resulted in a whipout etc and the person telling them their a total twat just can't handle the fact that they've died, like they've never made a mistake and their shit doesn't stink.
