i was driving back from work about 30 mins ago through town. i went round a corner and some drunken twat jumped out of no where right infront of me. i initiated a text book emergency stop and ended about 1 foot away from him.

i actually found it funny. not only did he jump out infront of me, he also tryed to stop the car with his hands. to make it more hillarious he then punched the door column (what ever its called) which probably hurt him more than it hurt the car.

after the merryments i simply drove off but wondered - should i actually give a shit that i nearly ran over this guy?

me too, or at least I'd have played it out in my mind

in an aside; one frozen day, I was driving down the (icy) road in my then-car. because I was driving slowly and carefully, a pedestrian thought it would be safe to step out in the road and cross in front of me. because the road was rather icy, said ped found it hard going to cross, and even at my snail's pace I nearly managed to hit him earning me some choice swearing. at the time I felt no remorse, as I thought said pedestrian a particularly thick individual who should have known better, but nowadays I am more aware of the fact that a human bouncing off the front of my car would not hurt me terribly, while the human would prolly end up rather damaged. I didn't brake or anything, because it was hard enough work gliding the car down the ungritted road towards the main road, and I had the idea that I may have gotten into a slide if I'd done anything drastic. Any thoughts?

btw, tris-, imo if a drunken idiot jumps out in front of a moving vehicle, then it's the hand of Darwin at work, and I don't give a toss how many kids the tipsy lad has or how much he donates to charity.

I watched an event like this happen.

A drunken guy was running down the middle of the road, cars going about 5 mph around him, right as one passed him he jumped onto it (or fell, stumbled etc). The driver braked suddenly and got out, the tosser got up and kept running down the road.

Oh yes, he seemed to have some friends on the pavement, why they weren't sticking him in a taxi or punching his face in I don't know.
