shat freeview reception/signal

i finally got around to connecting my freeview box today as 'the thick of it' special is on bbc4 tonight, but the signal is awful. i've connected it all properly etc, and it finds channels but the signal strength won't go over about 53, and the reception is constantly 'too corrupt' making it literally impossible to watch. it's like a slideshow, but the images aren't even solid. it's actually worse than a slideshow.

unfortunately it's one of those crap portable aerials that stick of out of the telly, as there's no aerial socket hole in the wall in this room to connect to the telly, and i've fiddled with it and moved it around but it's not helping, so what are my options? will the signal improve if i cover the aerial in aluminium foil or something? crystal palace is my local transmitter. at the moment all of my signals are flickering between 40-50 and the error bar is maxxed out 99% of the time.

Ideally you need an outdoor ariel for freeview, it is not very forgiving of poor reception.

Get an amplified ariel with a long lead that you can position higher up and closer to a window.
