Sharing net connection

Hi, I share adsl router with my flat mate, i dont download much but he downloads a tones of stuff he has 60 bit torrents running at once.

I mostly use the net for Daoc, but as he is downloading so much i am always getting hufge loss and going LD's alot.

IS there anyway or software i can use so that we both get an equal share.

You can probably configure it in router settings but this should do the trick too.

the only way afaik that i know is so that he limits his torrent downloads - else your scuppered up shit creek without a paddle

im working in Jersey atm on a hotel connection, and i am getting 5sec+ lag's which makes the game unplayable and is gonna force mw to quit

no there isn't

i find when i download its not the download that kills its the upload(on a 1/mb conection)
generally i find 2kb(both ways) is as far as i can go without large ammounts of packet loss

as him to download over night, most people wont have problem with it

... or get a seperate line

Tell him he has enough porn allready!


Alternatively stick in a new router that allows upsteam and downstream bandwidth allocation by ip. Software solutions sound like they arnt suitable in your case, as your mate wont want it installed on his PC?

block the torrent ports or just restrict the bandwidth they use

Your only option is to see if the router can do bandwidth limiting (but most cant) or ask him to set a limit on the torrents.

With most torrent clients you can specify an upload/download limit.

Other than that you'll need a device between the router and your network to filter and limit the available bandwidth

Yes, there is. It's called QoS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quality_of_service) and some routers or an OS like Linux support it.

Trouble is that most QOS is designed for a fixed line, so if you've got a 2Mb line, you can say that the torrent won't use more than 1.5 Mb, so, giving you .5 Mb for other traffic, or you can guarantee a minimum for Camelot.

Once you get ADSL, however, it's a bit trickier, as the size of the line is constantly varying.

There aren't many cheap QOS's, though. I've used some costing about 2 grand at work, and the difference they made to applications running over a work WAN was huge, easily better than doubling the bandwidth. The ones we used also included compression, and we were getting 20x compression on our main app (as it was mainly text in a web browser - some other, like Notes email couldn't be compressed). The performance difference was out of this world! Took a lot of tweaking to get them working just right.
