My motherboard has 2 onboard network connections, both show up in the winXP Network Properties.
I was using the 2nd connection which was working fine, until I installed Linux(FC4_64) which can only see the 1st NIC.
No problem, I thought, I'll switch to the 1st NIC which both Linux and WinXP can use.
Though now WinXP isn't using the card! The Status is fine, it's connected to my ISP, recieved an IP, DNS settings etc and I can renew it without problem.
I've uninstalled and disabled the 2nd NIC in the BIOS.
I've run through the network configs and whatnot several times with the 1st NIC active... but winXP just doesn't use it to connect to the internet!
No doubt I've missed a simple detail somewhere. I've had this problem before when my router couldn't cope with heavy BitTorrent usage and started overheating! So I pulled the plug and connected my PC straight to the modem. Which resulted in the same problem I'm facing now: the NIC was connected to the internet, but winXP wouldn't use it. I made several changes at random - as you do - until something worked. Now I don't remember which series of changes worked
