My mate has a problem that I cant solve as I have a meeting to go to and I'm too far away to ahve a look but here it is :) :

He is suffering from serious slowdown issues caused by regular 100% cpu useage cycles. Also, when looking at the processes running there are too many instances of svchost and some of the others are using far too much memory.

Here are screenies of the processes and cpu usage:

He has removed all traces of spyware and virii :) He has also updated windows with all the recent updates and sp1.

Can any of you shed light on what could be causing this? Any help would be appreciated.

I wouldn't say 5 is too many instances of svchost, i've got 4 instances running and that's because i've disabled some of the xp services

He seems to have McAfee running. He hasn't got it set to do a realtime scan? If it's scanning files constantly on the machine (I know McAfee does this by default on the machines at work) then it can really grind.

If he has the shield icon in the systray, get him to right click, quick enable, and untick system scan. It'ss still shield downloaded files and email, but will stop constant scanning.

If you're worried about what svchost is running, have a look here.

I'm more concerned about the amount of memory eacy of the processes is using. That, along side the strange CPU usage graph which is consistent and unrelenting.

just to be a ****....but it's not smart to run as administrator. make a proper user for your mate while you're at it. and not a handy one that has admin rights :(

Would not logging in as an administrator make the computer run a bit better? I play games and stuff under administrator, so if logging in as a peon would make it run better... ;)

I know tdc but it was a clean install and he hadn't got round to adding users and permissions.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions but the fucker has formatted anyway :)

Yes, it would, well sort of, because you can't run a lot of games at all under a non-Admin account, the batch includes up-to-date games like Championship Manager 03-04 and FIFA 2004.

Sounds like a useful feature rather than a bug to me :)
