actually, I believe the correct translation is "useless violence". it's the dutch catch-all phrase for violence in the streets.

a couple of days ago a man was stabbed to death in a dutch city after he had spoken to two yobs who had thrown a beer bottle, breaking it. for his trouble he was stabbed 14 times and died. the two yobs are aparently "known" by the police and have been detained.

so much for background. now, if some yobs were smashing up stuff as you walked by, would you say something of it? once apon a time when I was 15 or so, I saw a bloke nearly hit a girl in the street with his bike. I yelled at him to be careful as he'd nearly bowled her off her feet. I also had no idea at all what he was going to do as he biked over to me and hit me in the face giving me a black eye. naturally I was wrong to attempt to correct his actions ahem.

I still would say something of it if some little shit was kicking a dustbin over or some other brilliant act of defiance, but tbh I'm make damn sure I had some mates close to back me up.

your thoughts?

When I think about it in my head, I think "yeah, i would" but in reality and faced with the situation i'd think "not worth, don't wanna get stabbed".

Not likely. I 'got involved' once in high school on the annual sponsored walk and learnt my lesson.

I was walking with my two school mates and a group of not-so-bright troublemaking class rejects were walking behind us calling one of my friends out and trying to get him to fight them.

Must have had more balls back then because I turned around and walked up to them saying "I'll fight you" and I grabbed one of them, pulled his head down and knee'd him in the face. I was pretty pleased with myself until the big kid in the group (was from the year above) charged at me shouting "COME ON THEN!" and punched me in the head. Looked around for my friends for help and they were literally running down the path in the opposite direction.

I ducked away from the big kid and told him that I wasn't gonna fight him because he was "bigger than me", and I somehow got away from that unscathed but he would still go out of his way to push me in the corridor every time I walked past him for the next year or so. True story!

Was talking to my mate today about his time in Switzerland. He went there last year to work doing the roads. Anyways one night he was walking along a street after leaving the pub where he had been drinking and 3 blokes walked up to him then sprayed him in the face with pepper spray then tried to assault him. To cut a long story short 2 of the blokes ended up being thrown threw a window and the other got knocked out. It seems that the people who do this sort of thing either have no fear(my mate is an ex bouncer, covered in scars and huge) or they just don't care. I wonder what would of happened if my chum wasn't so aggressive and capable of handling himself, he may be dead now.

What is this world coming to.

Shocking.

I'd say something, but only if i had people with me to back me up, or they were far younger/smaller than me. If i was on my own and they were my size i'd probably let it go.

Id just stab them.

In reality Id say nothing. My life/health is worth more than a moment of someone elses misfortune

Depends upon circumstances tbh. We all know when we'd keep quiet, and when we'd say something. At the times I'd keep quiet, I'd phone the police.

Saying that, when those two twats broke into my last car and cut the parcel shelf up with a knife, it didn't stop me from racing around the area for 20 minutes trying to catch the fuckers, and run them down.

It would depend on the circumstances. If they're smashing stuff up, I'd just get on with my business as long as no one is in immediate danger. It's not worth the hassle, especially as in the area I live they're guaranteed to have a weapon or two between them.

I never actually had to fight.

Everytime someone comes looking for trouble I get a big adrenaline rush and start laughing like a lunatic.
I really can't help it :(

A 1.87m guy laughing like a maniac seems to scare most of those retards :D

Hmm depends.

When I was in my late teens, I was walking home on a Friday night with my gf of the time and we saw four town lad wankers hassling two REALLY scared girls. I vaguely knew one of the girls and just said - come with us. The lads mouthed off for a bit but the girls came with us and we walked off. Unfortunately to cut a long story short I got followed, beat up and stabbed twice as a result. I did get a cracking motorbike with the Victim Support money but thats another story ;)

So after that you might think I'd leave it be but...

After passing my brown belt in wado-ryu karate I was on a bit of a high. Imagine my sadness when two chavs attempted to hurl something at me when I was cycling past later that day. I kicked the fuck out of one of them as the other ran off.

It just depends on whether I think I could a) handle it or b) if its really dangerous behaviour or just someone being a dick that wont really harm anyone.

Interesting read this.
Is taking up some kind of self-defence stuff any use as either having technical ability to break people's knees at 900 paces through thought alone, or just being able to comport yourself much better, and having a physique to match ? I do know there isn't much you can do with some assaulting group of retards, first hand. :(

Nowadays I don't think that any sort of martial art would stop a bullet. Because that is what its turning to now.

Best to just weigh up the situation then take it from there. I haven't had a proper fight for ten years now, the last one was because a group of lads was shouting stuff at me and I had had a shitload of vodka that night. But after that it just got me thinking about how easy it would be to actually kill someone and end up in prison just for the sake of not walking away.

I played the Good Samaritan once when I stayed through in Edinburgh.

Walking home from Grindlay Street union, along Princes Street, I saw t guys beating the shit out of someone on the other side of the road. Kicking crap out of him when he was lying on the ground with his girlfriend screaming for help.

Ran across the road to try and calm things down, but the 2 guys seemed to think that it was ok to kick the crap out of anyone they met. Left the guy lying on the pavement and came for me instead (I wasnt being aggresive at the time - I usually try to avoid fighting)

Anyway, they werent having any of it. Took a well placed kick to one guys nuts and poking the other guys eyes to "persuade" them to calm down.

Managed to help the other guy up and made sure he was ok before going on my way.

If I need to fight, then I usually fight dirty - its better than fighting clean and getting a kicking.

I've not been in a fight since primary school and that was only a "scrap" that got pulled apart by the dinner laides.

I've never had anyone start on me in a serious way. I did dive into a fight once when I was pissed out of my skull to try and stop a mate getting beaten up by chavs. I got a broken bottle held to my throat but didn't realise till after I'd difused the situation and felt blood on my neck. Instead of my mates hanging around to back me up after I'd stopped the fight, I turned around and they were already halfway down the road. :(

Back to the original question of whther I'd step in now.... No I don't think I would. I don't know any martial arts and I'm not exactly in perfect physical shape. Plus there's always the worry that while they may be using their fists on the person they're having a go at, they may well be ready to pull a weapon should anyone intervein. I've seen people in trouble before and, from a safe distance, called the police so I've not just ignored it.

If it was a bunch of kids causing trouble by smashing stuff up I'd leave them to it and call the police as soon as I was out of sight. The trouble is there's gangs of kids around our area that wander around and if I singled myself out they'd make us and our car even more of a target than it has been in the past. In short, more often than not, it's more hassle than it's worth. You just have to live with your conscience.

If I was on my own I don't think I'd get involved I'm a lover not a fighter, I'd probably just call the police, if I was with some friends who would back me up I think I'd get involved.

The only remotley brave thing I have done recently would have been about a year ago when walking home from the local train station after work (winter time so dark nights), I was on one side of the road and 2 chavs on the other side, as I walked past I heard spit land a few inches away from me, for some reason I must have been feeling quite brave that day because I stopped and walked over the road to them at which point one of them ran off (brave guy) and the other stood there looking like he was about to cry, I proceeded to grab him by the throat and make some general threats then I walked off, I did wonder if I had did the right thing for the next couple of weeks though as I walk home the same way and time every day and expected to find him there with about 8 mates one day ready to kick my ass, luckily that's not happened....yet :)
