At the moment, my company has a nice little POP/SMTP mail server called MDaemon. Now, while this does everything quite nicely and includes a free LDAP plugin, I want to run something with a little more in the way of features.
I would propose Exchange, but management here have a habit of assigning funds to IT that wouldn't buy a replacemnt Hard Drive from eBay, let alone a new server, disk array and licences for 250+ email accounts. Plus I've yet to convince them that we need to destroy our NT4 domain and enter the real world, so there'd be no integration with an AD.
My idea was, I may be able to get them to give me some money for the server + storage if I can remove the cost of the MDaemon licences.
So, I've setup Sendmail boxes before, and this would happily replicate our current, costly, MDaemon setup, but as far as I know Sendmail doesn't have any kind of IMAP support. I've been looking at a program called Dovecot that appears to do everything I need, and for free. Woohoo!
Now, if you've got this far, I can ask my question. Is anyone currently an end user of a Sendmail/Dovecot setup, or even better, does anyone administor one.
If your answer is yes then I'm looking for some general idea as to how good it is. What kind of machine it would need for 1000+ users (for furture expansion) and what the load would be.
