Yeah, I'm sure she's really hard up for the cash. And coming up with a half assed plan that's not gunna work and with her saying "what the fuck are you doing" is asking for trouble.

Not all artists are bothered about internet piracy y'know.

It doesnt really matter how much cash she has, the fact is, piracy is wrong, and she has every right to make her point.

BTW I'm not a fan.

Piracy being *wrong* is not a FACT.

Its a moral assertion on your part.

It's theft. Legally and morally wrong, surely?

Personally I take an objective view of this. I find the idea of a fan listening to an mp3 of an artist asking them what the fuck they think they're doing somewhat amusing, and I find the hacker's response amusing as well.

Couldn't care less about the moral issue. It's more like watching two neighbours fight over a hedge.

is it morally right for the artists to charge outrageous prices?

Hold up. You're all saying piracy is wrong but probably have a hdd full of mp3s/movies/games etc right? Or am I seriously wrong in thinking any of you have ever pirated anything?

The artist can charge whatever they like. It's their music, if you don't like the price, don't buy it. Simple market forces. No right or wrong about it.

We're not talking about food here.

personally i think it's wrong for an industry to blame file sharing for a down turn in sales - which isn't all that great - that can be directly attributed to several other factors

file sharing gets music exposure
if i download a few songs and like them
i'm a shit load more likely to buy the albumn than if i haven't heard them

and i don't listen to radio or watch much tv
so downloading is how i sample the new stuff out there

Well said tbh.

If it wasn't for p2p and the "piracy" of music I wouldn't have bought those 5 CDs yesterday or the other 6 i bought the week before.

There are too many people who take a black and white stance to this. You can't pigeon hole p2p as piracy.

Anyway back on topic. You have to love that hacker :)

Thats not the point though.

Piracy is just a different form of stealing....and is therefore illegal.

You cant get upset with people who try and protect their property from theft....even though its pretty futile when it comes to digital media.

I know it's illegal, I was saying that. I was just wondering how many of you were saying that whilst actually hoarding a load of warez.

Nobody makes you buy the CD. Your choice at the end of the day if you part with the cash for CD

Yeah but it's not the artist that charges whatever they like, it's the big music companies that set ridiculous prices just to fill their pockets with even more cash.

CD prices are absurd, and they're the reason for the lack fo sales. Madonna is well within her rights to get uppity about people stealing her music, I just think she's being a bit of a prat about it. Her attempt at making it more difficult to get hold of her album is laughable, and the fact that she takes such an aggressive stance just begs for retaliation. That's exactly what she got and I find it very amusing..

This whole subject is being treated as though it's something new, typical net hysteria. Didn't we used to tape stuff off the radio/mates albums? Don't we still video tape movies and other stuff?
Reason for falling sales, too expensive. (+ crap music)

While software remains so (I know, possibly justified) hugely expensive, in my eyes I have no problem with those who warez appz etc. Games/films/music are a different story really, they're a lot cheaper and actually reasonably priced. The cost of software from the likes of Adobe etc. is an utter joke and how regular users should be expected to pay so much for software is beyond me.

Yeah but things like Photoshop are not exactly intended for home users :D

And yuck, didn't they say that VCR's would destroy the film industry when they came out? It's all a load bollocks tbh.

There are plenty of cheaper products around, even free ones, that do a similar job. If you're in the business or are freelance, and you require photoshop, then you should find it quite affordable.

The camera I use cost £30 000, the lens £7 000, batteries were about £1 500, tripod £3 000, and that doesn't include lights, accessories, grips, and all the other things I need. People are lulled into a false sense of security by the prices of domestic home user products. Mass production makes things cheaper.

Anyway, who are you to decide the price of CDs? You can't compare them to prices in the US, they have a bigger market over there, so prices are bound to be lower.

Comeon, lets not get in to an arguement over whether music cd's are over priced. It's patently obvious that they are, and everyone knows that the record industry takes a huge cut and puts the price up massively just to get that big wad of cash.

Consumers can buy decent quality blank cd's for 15p now. CD burners can be bought for 50 quid. The price of producing a cd itself is totally negligable. It then comes down to marketing and paying salaries. Now I'm sorry but the record industry could sell CD's for £5 and still rake it in. £12-15 is rediculous.

Don't get me wrong, I still buy music CD's, and rarely use MP3s. I just think the price of CD's is unjustifiable.

Oh, and more money should go to the artist too.
